There are three ways toxic chemicals enter the body: by swallowing, by breathing, or by contact with the skin or eyes. Every year 5-10 million household poisonings are reported with many of these poisonings being fatal. A 1985 EPA report concluded that the toxic chemicals in household cleaners are three times more likely to cause cancer than oudoor air pollution.
Also a report by the Consumer Product Safety Commission on chemicals commonly found in homes, identified 150 that have been linked to allergies, birth defects, cancer and psychological abnormalities. In one study conducted over a 15-year period, women who worked at home had a 54% higher death rate from cancer than women who had jobs away from the home. The study concluded that the increased death rate was due to daily exposure to hazardous chemicals found in ordinary household products.
What is not being reported are the slow poisonings that occur in every home from continual exposure to household cleaning chemcials. Cancer, birth defects, heart disease, genetic changes - almost any symptom imaginable, both physical and psychological, has been associated with certain chemicals in common household products. At greatest risk are fetuses, children, the elderly, pets, and those who are already ill.
Household cleaning chemicals put everyone
at risk -
adults, children, pets, and our water supply.
To cite only one example, a local California Department of Fish and Game tested the toxicity of common chemicals that they found in the waterways. The most toxic substances to aquatic organisms were household bleach, all-purpose cleaner, laundry detergent, and dish detergent. These were more harmful than such things as paint or car wax.
One reason chemicals are so dangerous is that they release toxic vapors into the air and remain there in our tightly sealed homes. If you want a vivid example of this, walk down the cleaning products aisle at the supermarket and notice the strong toxic odors, even though all packages are tightly sealed so they cannot leak.
In industry, workers are required to wear special gloves, goggles, and sometimes a respirator when using some of the exact same products found in our homes. Yet we use these products without any protection at all and usually without any ventilation.
