There are so many issues at hand for animals, whether they are pets or
animals raised for food. Humane treatment should be a key factor in any
decision for or use of an animal. There are lots of opportunities on the
internet to let your feelings be known in favor of better laws for all
creation.

Congress took on the issue in response to reports of pets hurt or killed by
rough handling on the ground, or by temperature extremes and oxygen
depletion in the air. Under the new rules, domestic airlines will have to
begin reporting animal losses, injuries or deaths to the federal Department
of Transportation.

The Air Transport Association says that more than 99% of the estimated
500,000 dogs and cats that airlines handle each year reach their destination
without incident. Critics say that means up to 5,000 pets are hurt, killed
or lost each year. Read the story:

SIGNS & SYMPTOMS OF EAR MITES

Even the most clean and careful owner can face an ear mite infection. Ear
mites are very contagious and can multiply rapidly. They can infest multiple
pets and not be readily apparent. Otodectes cyanotis is the scientific name
for ear mites, and this parasite comprises 84% of ear infections in cats.
Mites are members of the mange family, which is enough to make anyone itch!
Ear mites usually pass from pet to pet by direct contact, and they live on
animal blood. They are parasites that can also live freely in the
environment for short periods. When pets touch, groom or lay with each
other, the mites can crawl from one animal to another. Mites enjoy living in
dog ears too, but luckily they cannot live in human ears.

Head shaking and ear scratching are common signs of ear infections. Ear
mites typically cause ears to fill with crusty, brown debris, which is
visible during close inspection of the ears

To definitively diagnose ear mites, the parasites must be seen in the ear
canal or on swabbings from the ear. Veterinarians have instruments called
otoscopes that magnify and light up the ear canal. During otoscopic
examination adult mites are seen as small white bugs that move freely.
Veterinarians can also clean out suspicious ears with cotton swabs, make
slides of the debris, and examine them under a microscope. This reveals
individual mites and eggs.

Although ear mite infections are common, not every pet with an ear infection
has ear mites. Bacterial, fungal, or allergic conditions can affect the ears
and be confused with ear mites. After the diagnosis is made, veterinarians
are able to safely flush out the ears before treatment. This allows topical
medication to more effectively reach the trouble spots and give relief.

Veterinarians can dispense prescription combination products that include
antibiotics, antifungals, and cortisone.

Since ear mites are contagious between cats and dogs, an effective treatment
program involves all canine and feline members of a household. If you treat
one animal the mites may be carried by another and re-infestation can occur
at the end of treatment.

Some cats with long standing ear mite infections develop inflammatory polyps
in their ears. These polyps are benign growths that fill the ear canal.
Polyps can affect drainage of the ear and hearing, and they can predispose
the animal to secondary infections and ear wax buildup.

Every cat we've had has been a stray, so we've dealt with this many times. I
have always used Tea Tree Oil and it's done such a great job. I have never

Herb Usage Tips:

pet. If you can administer in capsule/tablet form, that's great. If not,
open the capsule or crush the tablet and put it into food. You can also
brew the herbs as a tea and administer by dropperful or in water bowl. Some

with the pet you are working with.
