** DONNA'S COMMENTS **
Pets are such an important part of our lives and research has shown that they can actually extend our life? Yet when was the last time your doctor prescribed a pet for your health? If you know somebody who needs a pet, maybe you'd like to share the following statistics in our Health Section with them and possibly save an animal shelter pet from premature death and provide increased life for the new owner. Give it some thought and share this information with at least one person you know. You can make a difference for an animal and a human :-)
Have a bow wow week!

** HEALTH/HERBAL INFO **
PETS EXTEND LIFE
The Cardiac Arrhythmia Suppression Trial studied men and women who had sustained
a heart attack and who had irregular heartbeats. Only 1 of 87 people (1.1%) who
owned dogs died during the study compared to 19 of 282 people (6.7%) who did not
own dogs - over 6 times as many! (American Journal of Cardiology, 1995, 76:1213-17)
An earlier study focused on patients who were recently hospitalized with a heart
attack or chest pain. After one year, only 6% of the pet owners died compared
to 28% of the patients who did not own pets - over 4 times as many! This finding
was independent of disease severity, exercise, or other known factors. (Public
Health Reports, 1980, 95:307-12)
Pet owners who received Medicaid benefits made fewer visits to their physicians
than non-owners. Having a pet causes decreased cardiovascular reactivity ) such
as blood pressure response). (Journal of Personality and Social Psychology, 1990,
58:1081-86)
In one study, the effect of a dog on lowering blood pressure reactivity was even
greater than the presence of a good friend - since the friend was often perceived
as judgmental whereas the dog was not. For many people, their pet may be as close
as they get to what these researchers term "nonevaluative social support" - in
other words, the experience of unconditional, nonjudgmental love. (Journal of
Nervous and Mental Disease, 1983, 171:461-65)

CARSICKNESS
Does your pet get carsick when you take him for trips? Try giving a little bit
of Ginger Root prior to the trip. Preferably not the ginger from the grocery store
which has formaldehyde in it or has been irradiated.
Research shows that Ginger Root prior to a flight or car trip works better than
Dramamine. If it's a long trip, you might want to take some along to give every
few hours.
Peppermint Oil is also good for nausea/car sickness. You can administer it to
the animal's paws and it will be absorbed and utilized by the body. Peppermint
Oil will also calm the animal a bit which may make it easier for the driver for
some pets.

DEWORMING
"I'm a licensed nurse and have been interested in herbs for about 4 years. We
have 70-80 goats and I've found that the chemical products are too harsh and don't
really solve any problems. I've been using herbal dewormers (wormwood, tarragon,
thyme, and black walnut) and have done parasite counts before and after treatment
with both drugs and the herbs, and I'm much more satisified with the herbal results."
Julie
We've used Black Walnut many times for pets and lots of folks we know put it in
their pets water for 10 days of every month. The liquid extract makes it easy
to do. Read more about Black Walnut at: http://www.theherbsplace.com/shop.html#blackwalnut

NEW CAT NOT GETTING ALONG WITH OTHERS
From Franny Syufy - About.com Cats Guide http://cats.about.com
"My friend Phyllis called me in tears last week. Her Mom had passed away and she
had brought home her cat, which only seemed to want to fight with the two "resident
cats." She was at the point where she was considering having Mom's cat "put to
sleep." I convinced her that Mom's kitty was grieving too; he had moved twice
in six months and needed some time to adjust to the loss of his surrogate mother,
and to the prospect of living in a new, strange house, with two other hostile cats.
She called again tonight and said the cats are just getting along marvelously.
The secret? A "baby gate." The cats can sniff and hiss at each other through it
without harming each other. After only a fe days, they're cheerfully co-mingling,
with all appearances of being "best buds." All's well that ends well, I say!"

OMEGA FATTY ACIDS
Pet owners have given fatty acids to their dogs and cats to change a dull, dry
coat into a more glossy one. Recently, veterinarians found that fatty acids play
important roles in other areas of health such as allergies, control of inflammation
and the function of vital body organs in cats and dogs. Some of the health problems
alleviated by the use of Omega Fatty Acids include: allergies, inflammatory diseases,
dull and dry hair coats, yeast infections, skin conditions in cats, preventing
atopy, eyes, heart, cancer, and cholesterol.
