** DONNA'S COMMENTS **
I had a bad experience last week. I called the three veterinary offices we have
in our town to find out prices for neutering a stray cat. There are no low-cost
spay and neuter programs in our county. We are just now getting a shelter built.
A couple years ago I joined two others in trying to get at least one of the vets
interested in the SPAY USA program, or any other, without success. It's sad when
you are forced to realize that all vets aren't in business to help animals. Two
out of three that I called had fees of $145 and $162. The third was "reasonably"
priced at $55 which included an overnight stay - at least they seemed to care
enough to provide some care after surgery. The others had them picked up the same
day.
How can people who love animals afford to follow their hearts and help them? There
is a limit to everybody's finances at some point. We have one stray right now
and we can pay the price.....but how it grieves me for those who want to help
and can't afford the fees. For those who even have pets of their own and can't
fit a spay or neuter into the budget.
I write this newsletter for pet owners/lovers and really enjoy passing along tidbits
of information to you. As I write, I always picture cozy little animals owned
by people who care so much that they subscribe to newsletters to learn more. However,
today I'm thinking about all the lonely pets that don't have a cozy home, and
about how many more are being born because of all the towns and counties that
don't have low-cost spay/neuter programs.
I plead with you and all who are interested in getting another pet...... please
take one from a shelter. All our animals have been strays, and I admit I couldn't
visit a shelter without my heart breaking, but I would call and choose one over
the phone and have somebody pick it up at the office. Not very brave, huh?
Now you can choose a pet online from a place like Petfinder.org:

Give some snuggle hugs to your pets today and while you're doing it, send up a
prayer for the lost and lonely animals. Thanks for being part of our Natural Pet
News list.

SIMPLE HERBAL GIFTS
CAT BLEND-----
2 oz Dried pennyroyal
1 oz Dried catnip
1 oz Chamomile
3 dr Peppermint oil
DOG BLEND-----
2 oz Dried pennyroyal
1 oz Dried thyme
1 oz Dried wormwood
3 dr Pennyroyal oil
Note: Each ounce of dried herbs is equal to about 2 cups. Use whole or cut herbs.
This mixture can be refreshed by adding fresh oil from time to time. Make small
sachets for small, tidy pets, or stuff the whole amount into a large denim pillow
for larger, itchier animal friends. Pennyroyal is especially effective as a flea
repellent.

CAT ACNE?
If your cat is prone to acne, feeding him from a plastic bowl may exacerbate the
condition. Plastic tends to hold on to bacteria. Use ceramic or stainless steel.

** SUCCESS STORY **
LABOR
"I use Raspberry leaves for rabbits in labor. When they are ready to
give birth, I give the does just a leaf or two to stimulate labor. I give raspberry
leaf tea if they are late or not progressing well in their labors. I squirt the
tea into their mouths if they are too exhausted to eat the leaves." Kellie

on how to figure the dosage:
