In your lifetime, try to be the person your pet thinks you are.

There are two means of refuge from the miseries of life: music and cats. - Albert Schweitzer

One reason a dog can be such a comfort when you're feeling blue is that he doesn't try to find out why.-Unknown

I care not for a man's religion whose dog and cat are not the better for it. - Abraham Lincoln

"Dogs need to sniff the ground; it's how they keep abreast of current events. The ground is a giant dog newspaper, containing all kinds of late-breaking dog news items, which, if they are especially urgent, are often continued into the next yard." Dave Barry

** DONNA'S COMMENTS **

In Alabama, in our bit of the woods, the weather has been getting humid by
early afternoon. We have family in Pennsylvania and it's been even warmer
there. Very strange! I'm not originally from the South, so I'm not fond of
hot weather, but then I'm not fond of shoveling snow either. I guess I'm
one of those people who love eternal Spring or Fall. I'd take either one
:-) I just like to have my doors and windows wide open for the sounds of
summer....but I don't like sweating to do it. Oh well.....for now, we have
the lovely mornings.....the "dog days" of summer will arrive all too soon.

Have a bow wow week!
Donna

ABSCESS & SORE HOCKS in RABBITS

"I use Lavender essential oil to heal abscesses and sore hocks. It also
kills skin mites, but I wouldn't use it in the ear. An herbal oil emulsion
with lavender extract would be better for that. You should be able to get
flax seed whole from any health food store or coop." Gail

INTEGRATING A NEW PUPPY INTO THE HOME

A message from Dr. Doug, resident vet at InternetPets.com

The leading cause of death in domestic animals is behavior "problems". Such
unacceptable behavior, perhaps normal for the pet, is judged through human
eyes. I believe that our animals inherit the tendency for certain
behaviors, and it is our responsibility to guide their actions to reasonably
fit into our environment.

House-training is a great place to start. In my opinion, a puppy developing
without our guidance will relieve itself virtually anywhere except perhaps
its bed, and sometimes even the sleeping area is not spared. We need to
interact, to teach, to reinforce, and gently mold this eager-to-please
youngster into what we feel is acceptable.

Generally, the goal is to keep those potty breaks to a fairly limited area
outside. Sounds simple enough, but realistically reaching this goal can be
very difficult, indeed. Consistency, patience, praise, feeding......all are
critical to house-training in a reasonable amount of time. If the pup is
alone for long periods of time during the day, the process obviously takes
more time.

As in all behavior training and modification, NEVER STRIKE THE PET. Negative
interaction doesn't help and will create a whole new set of problems that
the pet may never recover from. Also, rubbing your pup's nose in a new pile
isn't helpful either.

Simply follow a few easy steps on a consistent basis, and house-training
doesn't have to be a feared, angst-ridden experience. I will attempt to
outline the steps I recommend:

1) Initially, devote as much time to your pup as possible; observe
closely.
2) Avoid meals prior to your leaving the pup alone, and before bedtime.
3) Physically pick the pup up and carry him or her outside to an area.
you have determined is suitable for potty break. Do this as often as
possible, certainly hourly at the beginning.
4) Place pup on ground. When pup begins sniffing reinforce this
behavior with a small treat (certain odors stimulate dogs to do their thing,
so encourage them).
5) If your puppy rewards you by having a B.M. or urinates, let him know
what a cool guy he is. Verbal praise, petting, a snack.......all these help
to reinforce this "good" behavior.
6) If you observe the pup relieve himself inside, quickly carry him
outside and repeat the process.

If followed consistently, these steps should make house-training quick and
simple. Give yourself ample credit for a job well done........you are on
the path to sharing your life with a darling, well-mannered friend.

ALFALFA

This herb is well-known for use in animals....usually cows and horses :-)

Alfalfa has been used historically in herbal medicine for arthritis,
allergies, joint problems, and as an appetite enhancer for a weak animal.
Being rich in trace minerals, it provides nutrients to the body that are no
longer in the upper soils where our food is grown. The roots of the alfalfa
plant go deep into the ground to pick up minerals that aren't present in the
topsoils.

Stock #30-2: $10.95 (100 capsules)
