Fourth of July is approaching and if you plan to get some fireworks for the
holiday, please remember to protect your pets and children while using them.
Pets do not like loud noises since their ears are so sensitive, so be sure
to have them "tucked away" before you celebrate with fireworks!

Wanting to make something special for your dog? There's nothing like a
home-cooked meal!

CAROL'S FURKIDS FAVORITE STEW
Provided by Carol Ressler

(These amounts can be doubled, if you have a big enough kettle)

3 medium chicken thighs (or 2 large ones)*
1 cup brown rice
1 cup barley
About 3-1/2 cups of filtered water
1 tablespoon powdered chicken bouillon
1 teaspoon garlic powder (or 1 medium clove garlic, sliced up)
1 teaspoon ginger-optional (my furkids love the taste of this, and it is
good for the digestion)
1 teaspoon cinnamon-optional (this is also good for digestion, and it helps
the bad breath)
1 cup frozen green beans, rinsed with hot water to thaw a bit
1 cup frozen green peas, rinsed with hot water to thaw a bit
3 medium carrots, sliced (or 3 large ones, and let your furkids have some
raw to clean their teeth)
About 3 cups pasta of your choice-any shape or size will do (I like the
veggie pasta corkscrews)
Pam cooking spray

*I use thighs because there is only one bone to remove later on.
REMOVE ALL BONES FROM THE STEW BEFORE SERVING!

Place the chicken, rice, barley, water, and seasonings in a pressure cooker
sprayed with Pam. Bring up to full pressure, and cook for 30 minutes.
Release the pressure slowly, and add all the remaining ingredients. Cover,
and allow to set overnight, so that the pasta soaks up the remaining liquid,
and the veggies get soft. The mixture should end up with the consistency of
a casserole, not a soup, so...add more water or more pasta, as needed. Mix
well-break up the chicken, REMOVE ALL BONES, divide up into portion-sized
containers, and freeze. This batch makes about 7 days worth of food for my
furkids. I feed about 1 to 1-1/4 cups of this mix per day per furkid, mixed
with the appropriate amount of dry Innova (naturapet.com) based on their
weights.

If you don't have a pressure cooker, just use a regular kettle, cooking the
chicken covered about 1 hour or so, until it is soft and the rice/barley is
cooked tender. Then add the pasta and veggies, cover, and go from there. I
used to think I did not have the time to cook for pets, but, let me tell
you-anyone can do it. I work a full time job, and manage an entire household
inside and out alone, and I can do this one evening while I am watching TV
or running laundry, then pack it up the next day.

EAR PROBLEMS - CONSIDER YEAST!

"My golden retriever has a yeast allergy which results in a constant severe
Candida yeast infection in both his ears, to the point of bleeding inside
the ear canal, which he then rubs, making it worse. I use the adult Innova
diet for his food, which contains no yeast or yeast products, and his ears
have almost totally cleared up. This happened within a month after I began
using the Innova (naturapet.com), and eliminating the yeast from
his diet. I still have to use a vinegar rinse, and I use a mixture that I
make up myself of tea tree oil, cinnamon oil, aloe vera gel and witch hazel
to wipe his ears out after I flush them. But, the discharge and internal
bleeding has totally stopped - all that remains is a small amount of dry
brownish debris, which is easily removed with a weekly flush and a quick
wipe. I no longer have to clean out his ears twice a day, like I was doing
- I can do them once a week or so." Carol Ressler

This herb is very "old-fashioned" and useful for pets and humans. It's
great to improve circulation for pets who are older and have problems with
