** DONNA'S COMMENTS **
As I was thinking about comments for the 4th of July and I remembered
reading the following comments. It couldn't be said any better:
Comments from Franny Syufy
http://cats.about.com
"Although cats normally spend an inordinate amount of time practicing
their
sleeping skills, during summer hot spells be aware of the temperature and
watch your furballs for signs of lethargy or fever, that might indicate heat
stroke. If you think your cat is suffering from the heat, call your
veterinarian right away and follow his or her instructions. Remember that
cats can't tell us when they're sick; it's up to us to always be aware of
their well-being."
Have a great Fourth of July and don't forget to be thankful that we live in
a free Nation! It's a blessing we tend to take for granted.

BONES - DIFFERING OPINIONS
How about a little controversy to liven things up this week? Unlike
politics, where each candidate has ALL the right answers, there's
room for an honest difference of opinion in real life.
Along with some excellent advice on what NOT to feed your dog, Deborah
Burton of Fuzzy Faces says stay away from bones:
http://www.fuzzyfaces.com/lhealth2.html
Dr. Tom Lonsdale is a proponent of feeding raw meaty bones to our canine
friends in an article entitled, "Diet is the Cornerstone of Good Health -
Quick Diet Guide":

Read them both and you decide.

** SUCCESS STORY **
NATURAL FLEA CONTROL FOR ME
"I discontinued the use of brewers yeast in my pets food due to an allergy
to yeast, so I had to find something else to use for flea control, since I
had used brewers yeast and garlic for the last 10 years or so, with total
flea control on the furkids and in their environment.
To compensate for the removal of the brewers yeast, I increased the amount
of garlic I was giving each furkid. And, I began using a spray of filtered
water mixed with tea tree and lavender essential oils each time I bring them
in from their daily walk. I also use both of those oils mixed with water as
a rinse, or 'dip', after their monthly bath. I only use a natural tea-tree
based shampoo for their bath-no artificial ingredients. I can only tell you
that this method works like a charm, and again I believe that the high
quality nutrition from Innova pet food (naturapet.com) they receive is a
major part of the reason WHY it works. I have never had to dip my dogs for
fleas, nor do I use Program, Advantage, or any other flea control. And, the
furkids get a bath only once a month, even here in south Florida, also known
as the flea capital of the world!
Another benefit: my whole house smells wonderful-no dog smell anywhere! My
Aussie has a coat like a Chinchilla (that was my vet's comment to me), and
my golden boy gets me comments like, 'What kind of oil do you use on his
fur? It is SO shiny and soft. Where can I get it?'. No kidding, and no oils
- just good nutrition and care." Carol Ressler

NOCTURNAL NIGHTMARES - YOUR WAKE-UP CAT
From InternetPets Newsletter
http://www.internetpets.com/
Cat owners never need an alarm clock in the mornings. More often than not,
kitty wants to get up at 5 AM and play long before you want to see the light
of day. Is your cat insane? Attacking anything it finds the least bit
strange? Sprinting around the house for no apparent reason? Mistaking parts
of your body for a catnip toy? If you said yes, your cat is in fact quite
normal.
Why do cats have such crazy sleep cycles? The natural predatory cycle of
cats corresponds to the evening and early morning - the time when rodents
are most likely to be available to hunt. Even if you have an indoor cat, the
instinct will be to stay at those sleep cycles.
Unfortunately, by ignoring your cat or locking your bedroom door, your cat
will cry for hours. By training your cat that those are your sleep hours,
you'll see a decline in early morning behavior. By giving in to your cat's
demands, you are only reinforcing that it is OK to scratch at the door at 4
AM.
To help deter early morning playtime, give your younger kitten plenty of
attention the evening before. Cats like routine, so be consistent when you
schedule your kitty's attention. Give the kitten an hour of your time right
before bedtime - play, pet, groom, cuddle - so that she does not feel
starved for attention in the middle of the night.
Make sure your cat has a snack before you go to bed. That way you can
eliminate hunger as a reason kitty wants attention.
Use discouragements to reinforce the early morning rules. Hair dryers,
squirtguns, and well placed cayenne pepper will discourage your kitty from
bothering you. Shutting your bedroom door at all times is a good idea. This
way your pet will perceive the bedroom door as she does the front door, and
will find her own entertainment outside of it. Just be sure to move any of
her toys & blankets that may be in your bedroom out into other areas of your
home.
Remember, by giving in to your cat's demands, the worse the behavior will
get. Ignore your cat, even if you want to give attention in the morning. By
exercising tough love, your cat will learn the rules.
