** DONNA'S COMMENTS **
Have you ever seen a picture of an animal and fallen in love right then and
there! Knowing it would be a match made in Heaven? Well, that's what
happened in one of those "happy ending" stories here. If you're looking
for
a "perfect" pet and can't find what you want locally, give this site
a try!
LOVE AT FIRST SITE - On The Web
When Alan Zelhart saw Oreo's picture on http://www.petfinder.com, the
nationwide network of 17,000-plus adoptable animals in shelters and foster
homes across the country, it was love at first sight. There was just one
hitch--how to get the big tri-colored collie from the Saline Animal League
in Marshall, MO, to Alan's home in Arizona.
Where there's a woof there's a way. For a play-by-play of the
operation--and to find out how this lucky dog is doing in his new home,
Zelhart invites readers to visit his homepage,
http://www.azweb.com/coldfire/~gizmoaz.htm, and click on the "Oreo Come
Home" icon.
Through its alliance with Petfinder, the ASPCA works to expand the number of
community shelters participating in the site and provides online information
about pet care and shelter management issues.
Have a great week!

BONES - DIFFERING OPINIONS
How about a little controversy to liven things up this week? Unlike
politics, where each candidate has ALL the right answers, there's
room for an honest difference of opinion in real life.
Along with some excellent advice on what NOT to feed your dog, Deborah
Burton of Fuzzy Faces says stay away from bones:
http://www.fuzzyfaces.com/lhealth2.html
Dr. Tom Lonsdale is a proponent of feeding raw meaty bones to our canine
friends in an article entitled, "Diet is the Cornerstone of Good Health -
Quick Diet Guide":

Read them both and you decide.

** SUCCESS STORY **
F.I.V. (Feline Immunodeficiency Virus)
E.C. breeds and shows cats. Three of her cats came down with a virus called
F.I.V. This is a fatal virus, comparable to AIDS in cats. The vet told her
the cats would be dead in three days. She called me and asked if I had
anything she could give the cats. I gave her the VS-C formula and suggested
she give the kittens 1 capsule a day and the cat 2 capsules a day. The cats
are still alive and it has been almost two months since she gave the cats
the formula. The vet is absolutely astounded. She just can't believe what
has happened. The vet says there is no cure for F.I.V., but can't explain
what the herbs did.

** BEHAVIORAL/EMOTIONAL ISSUE **
FEAR OF NOISE
Q: My 7 month old female border collie is extremely afraid of noise. eg.
helicopter goes overhead, mix master, vacuum, saw. She will run away and
hide. Can you help me help her get over this. J & J
A: You may be able to condition your dog to these sorts of sounds by getting
recordings of them (they sell sound effect CDs and records) and playing them
at very low volume on the stereo, then gradually increase the sound
intensity until your dog becomes accustomed to the noises. It is probably
best to get advice on this from a behaviorist, if possible, since the
conditioning technique works better if you can recognize the first signs of
nervousness and just push to that level with the sound. Also, different dogs
need to work at different speeds and having the help of someone who has done
this sort of thing before is useful. A very nervous dog might do better if
an anti-anxiety medication is used in conjunction with training. You might
want to talk to your vet about this, since these are prescription
medications. Your vet may know of a good behaviorist in your area, too.
Hope this helps some. Mike Richards, DVM

DISASTER PREPARATION FOR YOUR PETS
We don't like to think about it, but when the earthquake,
tornado or hurricane comes, our stress level and that of our
pets, will be greatly reduced if we have a plan.
