The weather is getting cold in many states and car owners will be adding
antifreeze for the winter. Remember the dangers of antifreeze and protect
your pets. According to Jill A. Richardson, DVM, of the ASPCA Animal Poison
Control Center, most cases of antifreeze poisoning in dogs and cats occur
around the pet's own home. Dr. Richardson recommends taking the following
precautions to keep pets safe from accidental exposure: *Clean up antifreeze
spills immediately. *Check your car regularly for leaks. When you back
out, take a look. *Never have your pet around when you are draining
antifreeze from the car. *Consider switching to products containing
propylene glycol, such as Prestone Low Tox, which are less toxic than
conventional ethylene glycol antifreeze. *If you suspect that your pet has
ingested antifreeze, contact your veterinarian immediately. There is also
an emergency hotline (1-888-4-ANI-HELP) that provides 24-hour telephone
assistance.

CORRECTING KITTY

Behaviorists say it is time for more creative solutions to behavior problems
than those you can administer while present (i.e. squirt gun, bop on the
nose), so it will work when you are asleep or at work. Let circumstances
convince Kitty of what he should and shouldn't do. Booby traps are the
secret to keeping Kitty from forbidden areas when you are away.

Some of these kitty repellents are vinyl carpet runners turned upside down
(ouch!), eucalyptus oil on rags, a mini-motion detector from Radio Shack,
and double-sided carpet tape to divert scratching activities. Be sure there
are many more places for Kitty to jump on or to scratch to avoid
frustration.
