** DONNA'S COMMENTS **
Our cats seem to feel right at home now that it's a month since we moved
here to Virginia. To make them feel more comfortable while we got settled
we kept them in our bedroom. They seem to have developed a liking for the
"room" under the bed. I've been calling them "CAVE KITTIES."
LOL They
sleep there all day and then play all night in the house. We've got to
change thier schedule soon! :-)
Holidays seem to be a tough time for pets. For many people, over indulging
in holiday goodies may result in a few extra pounds--but the consequences
for our animal companions are much greater if they accidentally ingest
cookies, candy or baked goods containing chocolate.
In any form ranging from one-ounce baking squares to brownies, chocolate
contains theobromine and caffeine, both methylxanthines that can cause
stimulation of the central nervous system, an increase in heart rate and
tremors. Clinical symptoms--vomiting, diarrhea, seizures, hyperactivity, and
increased thirst, urination and heart rate--can be seen with the ingestion
of as little as 1/4 ounce of baking chocolate by a ten-pound dog.
Although chocolate toxicosis is more common in dogs, who have been known to
eat candy and trays of brownies and fudge accidentally left out, it is a
potential problem with any species, Richardson says. Take care this holiday
season to keep all candy out of your pets' reach--and don't let them in the
kitchen unsupervised when you're baking. If you suspect your pet has eaten
chocolate, call your veterinarian or this emergency hotline for
round-the-clock telephone assistance: 1-888-4-ANI-HELP
May your pet have a safe and "uneventful" holiday season :-)

** HEALTH/HERBAL INFO **
It's time for those holiday trips back home. Plan the trip to benefit your
pets too if you are taking them along.
TRAVELING BY CAR WITH YOUR PET
Traveling with a pet usually involves more than putting the animal in a car
and driving off, especially if you will be driving long distances or be away
for a long time. The American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA) offers
these tips to help you prepare for a car trip with your pet and make it go a
little smoother.

IT WORKED! THEY STOPPED SCRATCHING MY COUCHES
"I have cats. The only problem that I have with them is that they
love to
use my living room couches for scratching posts. I have repaired them so
many times that I have lost count. When I am home I would dread someone
filming me with a video camera because the results would have me in the
loony bin in a heart beat. I spend all of my time yelling "NO"
or chasing
my cats with a squirt bottle filled with water. When I am not home they
do
as they please which results in another mending job.
I have used double-sided tape, tin foil, coffee beans or pennies in tin
cans balanced on the arms of the furniture, store purchased "Repel,"
inflated balloons, you name it. They have nerves of steel and once they
trip the obstacle, the couches are in need of band aids again.
As soon as I read the previous article, "Correcting Kitty," I headed
for
the bottle of Nature's Sunshine Eucalyptus Oil. I put one drop on the arms
of each of the two couches and one drop on each of the eight corners. I
sat
down in the dining room to watch. My bravest one walked up to the corner
of
the couch to hook the fist paw full of claws into her favorite corner of the
couch. As she started to touch it she paused and began sneezing. She
immediately left the area of the couch with an expression of "offended"
on
her face. Over the course of an hour three others approached the couches
to
do their dirty deeds. Once they got a whiff they too left the area, some
faster than others.
When I came home from work tonight the first thing that I noticed was
that the front part of the house smelled wonderful. The second thing that
I
noticed was that all of the little felines were waiting for me in the dining
room instead of in their favorite positions on the couches." Carolyn
