** DONNA'S COMMENTS **
It's 2001 and bet a lot of you are making new year resolution lists. As you
do so, remember to include some items for your pets also. Following are
some statistics that may help you add an item on your list.
According to a recent survey including 2001 cat and dog owners in the U.S.
conducted by the Purina Pet Institute, 95% of dog owners pet and hug their
dog daily and 43% have celebrated his birthday, but fewer than 20% have
taken their dog to obedience training. A substantial 34% still hadn't had
their dog spayed or neutered.
Among cat owners, 91% pet and hug their kitties daily, 16% have taken their
cat on vacation with them, but 15% haven't had their feline spayed or
neutered.
There are 5.1 millions animals killed each year at animal shelters and more
die by starvation and other horrible reasons. Pet owners don't intend for
their pets to get out and participate in populating, but it happens. Please
seriously consider spaying and neutering your animal in this new year, if
you haven't already done so. If you'd like more information on low-cost
spaying and neutering, I've included a site below.
Happy & Blessed New Year to YOU!

** HEALTH/HERBAL INFO **
NICOTINE - HAZARDOUS TO YOUR ANIMAL'S HEALTH
The effects of cigarette smoking on humans has been well-documented, but did
you know that tobacco products can be fatal to domestic canines and felines
if ingested? Signs of nicotine poisoning often develop within 15 to 45
minutes, reports Jill A. Richardson, DVM, of the ASPCA's National Animal
Poison Control Center (NAPCC), and can include excitation, salivation,
panting, vomiting and diarrhea. Muscle weakness, twitching, depression,
collapse, coma, increased heart rate and cardiac arrest can follow; death
can occur secondary to respiratory paralysis. Adds Richardson, "It's more
common for a dog than a cat to eat cigarettes, but amazingly, pet birds
often chew on them, too."
If you or any of your family members smoke, please be sure to keep
cigarettes and cigars out of your pet's reach; the same applies to the
nicotine patches and gum often prescribed to stop smoking. And keep in mind
that butts contain about 25 percent of the total nicotine content of a
cigarette, so dump those ashtrays frequently.
In addition to offering information online at http://www.napcc.aspca.org,
the NAPCC al{o runs an emergency hotline--1-888-4-ANI-HELP--providing
round-the-clock telephone assistance.

TATTERED LOVE: HELP FOR SEPARATION ANXIETY
It is estimated that 10-15 percent of the canine population experiences some
type of separation anxiety. Separation anxiety is tied to a dog's natural
instinct to be part of a pack, which explains why cats do not seem to suffer
from this problem. But there are many things you can do to help your lonely
pooch out. She certainly deserves the help; after all, she acts out because
she's longing for you.

OMEGA-3 FISH OILS
Now is the time to build up the essential fatty acids (EFAs) in your pet to
prevent allergies problems when it gets warmer. It's easier to prevent,
