** DONNA'S COMMENTS **
As you may know, the Escondido Humane Shelter was destroyed by fire late
Saturday night, January 20th. Tragically, more than 100 dogs, cats, and
other animals perished. Due to heroic efforts of the fire department,
police, staff, and volunteers, at least 85 of the 200 animals in the shelter
survived. Many of those are being treated for smoke inhalation and burns.
Individual and corporate donations are urgently needed to treat the animals
and to raise the $3.5 million to $5 million to rebuild. This includes money
as well as building supplies and services. All checks should be
made out to "Escondido Humane Society" and mailed to: Escondido Humane
Society, 3000 Las Palmas Avenue, Escondido, Ca 92025. Any small amount
would make a difference if you'd like to be a small (or big) part of this
project. Read more..... http://www.escondidohumanesociety.org/
We can make a difference in the world for the animals....

OMEGA-3 and YOUR PET
Until recently, the omega-3 fatty acid in dog food has largely
been ignored. But now, scientists, veterinarians, pet food
producers and consumers recognize omega-3's value.
Omega-3 fatty acids are a family of polyunsaturated fatty acids
also identified as essential fatty acids (your pet's body can't
make them, they must be consumed in food or by supplementation).
Omega-6 fatty acids are also essential.
Foods like corn, corn oil, sunflower and safflower oil and meat
such as chicken raised on diets high in corn based diets are high
in omega-6. Omega-3 fatty acids are found in higher
concentrations in fish, flax seed, flax seed oil, perilla seed
and green leafy vegetables.
Omega-3 fatty acids are usually recognized as the "good" fatty
acids, helping to form cell membranes, aiding immunity, brain and
visual function and overall health. Nearly every cell in your
pet's body contains and relies upon these special fatty acids.
While omega-6 is essential for immunity, when an animal consumes
too little omega-3 the omega-6 it takes in can provoke
inflammatory diseases and compromise its overall health.
The nutrient composition of a pet's diet is critical: the food
you provide is the sole source of nutrients for the animal. The
fatty acids are as important as other essential nutrients.

CATARACTS
"Do you remember a few years back when you suggested EW for Bandit
because he was getting cataracts? Well, it cleared them right up when I made
the eyewash. Now I give him the EW just a couple times a month here and
there when I can remember and his eyes are nice and clear...cool huh? I
would hate to see him go blind....it sure did work for my precious dog!"

** BEHAVIORAL/EMOTIONAL TIP **
CAT BEHAVIOR
The most common cat owner complaints have to do with litter box habits,
clawing and aggression. Fortunately, most of these problems stem from normal
feline behaviors and can be solved or prevented. A little patience and
enough understanding to allow you to see the situation from your cat's point
of view can foster a long, loving life with your feline friend.

EXPLAINING PET DEATH TO CHILDREN
"For many children, pet death is the first time they will experience grief
over death. Handling a pet's death in a positive way empowers children to
handle grief in the future," explains Julia Brannan, third-year veterinary
student and student director of the Companion Animal Related Emotions
(C.A.R.E.) Helpline at the University of Illinois College of Veterinary
Medicine. "Being honest with children is the most important factor."
