Since I don't have a safety tip for every issue, I use this space to alert
you to possible dangers in the home. It is not only sad for pets who get
injured in the home, but it is so horrible for the owner who loves it to
carry the burden of guilt around. Knowledge is power, the saying goes. I
hope that the bit of knowledge I try to send your way is helpful not only to
you but to those you know and share information with.

The issue I have to deal with now is pets drinking out of toilet bowls.
When a pet is thirsty, it will drink from any place it can find water.
Veterinarians at the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center say water
from the toilet can irritate a pet's gastrointestinal tract, particularly
if you use tank drop-in cleaning tablets, which contain corrosive agents
that can cause mild vomiting and nausea. If the tablet itself gets chewed
on, it can cause chemical burns.

The Animal Poison Control Center recommends you simply keep the lid down on
all the toilets in the house. Dr. Richardson states,"We always tell pet
owners to never allow their pets access to areas in which cleaning agents
are being used or stored."

Subscriber Karri C. writes, "Our dog had the same (digging) problem.
He would dig and then I noticed him sniffing the holes. I would cover
them up and he would dig again and sniff. I finally tried putting some
pepper in the holes and that did it. Now he only digs in the sand box
or right next to it when the kids are digging."

Another subscriber adds, "... He will want to start another hole,
and it takes some persistence on your part to follow him around for
several holes, but after a while the dog believes that in every hole
there will be pepper! It has worked with three different dogs for us!
By the way, only use black pepper--the red pepper could get into the
dog's eyes and burn, and the object here is to dissuade, not to punish
for something that comes naturally to them."

And another agrees, "Our Boxer had a problem with digging down
to the pipes on our septic tank drain field. I got a big bottle of
black pepper and started sprinkling it on any little spot she
scratched at (before they were holes). It only took a week or so to
break that habit."

Sounds like a good tip! Remember to make it black pepper, not cayenne.
