** A NOTE FROM DONNA **
As pet lovers, we know the importance of spaying and
neutering pets and strays. For five years, the Prevent a
Litter Coalition (PaLC) has worked tirelessly on a single
campaign--to get the U.S. Postal Service to issue a
spay/neuter stamp.
Their website now offers a sample letter to the
Postmaster General so you can participate in this campaign.
Public awareness of the necessity and good of spaying and
neutering is critical to saving the lives of millions of dogs and
cats each year.
I hope you will visit the site and take a moment to send your
own letter to the Postmaster General recommending a
Spay/Neuter Postal Stamp.

** SUCCESS STORY **
HOT SPOTS ON DOGS
"I've used a homemade Hot Spot remedy that works great. Here's the
recipe: 3 capsules SAGE, 1/4 tsp. Epsom Salts, and 2 cups of water. Bring
this all to a boil. Cool to room temperature and then strain out the
powdered Sage and store in a 2-cup spray bottle or jar in the refrigerator
to keep fresh. Spray or wipe on hot spots, insect bites or any other skin
abrasions as many times a day as possible. It heals in about 3 days, and you
should begin to see some hair regrowth in a little over a week." Tammy

NOISE SENSITIVITY
TipWorld.com - Dog Training

QUESTION:
Subscriber Shawn M. writes, "I adopted a dog from PAWS that is scared
of everything (including the sound of a plastic bag and people talking
loud in a room). He is very loving and obeys all commands, but I want
to help him get over these fears. Do you have any suggestions?"
ANSWER:
A lot of things depend on how long you have had this dog. It would
also help to know if you know anything about the dog's life before
you. If you've had him less than, say, three months, we suggest you
simply spend your time getting used to each other and your daily
routines. After that, you can begin desensitizing him to noise and
then counter-conditioning. This principle works with many behavior
problems (for example, we mentioned it a few weeks ago in connection
with a dog barking at horses).
· Desensitize the dog. This means gradually exposing your dog to
difficult situations--in this case, noises. Allow the dog to become
comfortable in progressively challenging situations. For example, at
first expose the dog to noises that are far away and, as the dog can
handle it, the noise comes closer and closer. This might take more
than one session with various noises.
· Counter-condition the dog. This means teaching him to change his
reaction to a given stimulus. If hearing noises makes him upset, try
to have the sound of these noises to come to mean Fido gets a
wonderful treat. In other words, instead of associating noises with a
fearful response, he will associate them with food. You may need to
feed less at mealtimes if he is getting a lot of treats in training.
