EXPOSURE CAN INCREASE TOLERANCE TO CAT ALLERGIES

Children who live with cats are less likely to develop allergies to them,
according to a study at the University of Virginia Health System. In the
study, UVa researchers looked at 226 middle school children, 47 of whom had
symptoms of asthma. The researchers visited the children's homes and
measured the allergens in the air. "This allowed us to know what the dust
in
the house is like," said Dr. Thomas Platts-Mills, the lead investigator of
the study and a professor of internal medicine and microbiology at UVa.
"We were able to determine who has cats, dogs, cockroaches and dust mites.."
Researchers found that children who lived with cats were less likely to be
allergic to them, but those same children could be allergic to other common
irritants, like pollen. While a high exposure to cat allergens results in
increased tolerance, the opposite is true in the case of dust mites, the
study found. "The higher the level of dust mites, the more severe the
allergic reaction was," Platts-Mills said.
The study may be useful in determining why asthma is on the rise. Asthma is
the leading cause of chronic illness in children, according to the Asthma
and Allergy Foundation of America. More than 5.5 million children have been
diagnosed as having asthma. The number of cases have increased by more than
75 percent in school-age children during the last 15 years.
"The study provides new information to explain the link between the
environment and an increased risk for asthma," Platts-Mills said. "High
exposure to cat allergens can induce a form of tolerance, which in turn
makes it very unlikely that the increase in asthma has been caused by an
increase in exposure." Platts-Mills said he also hopes the findings will
contribute to the development of new techniques to manage asthma. "If we
can
understand why children become tolerant, then we can begin to understand why
other children aren't tolerant," Platts-Mills said. "To find a cure
you
first have to understand the immune response."

"I live in the woods with 2 cats and a dog and my share of the flea
population. I have great success with minimal flea problems by having my
pets on good food and a flea control plan. I bathe my dog in a solution of
TEA TREE OIL (1 T. per gallon) and LIQUID CHLOROPHYLL and use a few drops in
the shampoo as well and I give all of my pets GARLIC. I also keep a solution
of TEA TREE OIL and water to spritz on the dog when he comes in from an
extended stay outside as an extra precaution. Since my cats don't enjoy
taking a bath, I spritz a comb and brush them. I also use TEA TREE OIL in
the mop water when mopping the floors to deter the little critters from
coming inside. I have yet to have a flea infestation and it is chemical-free

PRACTICING BASIC COMMANDS

Here are some general tips on how to practice obedience commands with
your dog:
- SIT--It's a simple, straightforward command. Insist he do it well.
He should not end up in front of you.
- DOWN--Usually this comes from the sitting position, so you must give
the sit command (and praise him) first. He should go straight down and
not creep forward or back. Give him three seconds to do the command.
- WAIT--A good command to use in cars and in external doorways. And
don't tolerate whining with STAY! Stay means stay!
- LET'S GO--This is the command used for walking loosely on lead. Fido
has three rules: (1) Stay on the left side; (2) No pulling, and (3)
Keep an eye on me.
- COME--Go slowly and teach your dog to come even around tempting
distractions (including other dogs, wildlife, or ladies handing out
free dog cookies). Do not give your dog the privilege of being off
lead until you are certain he will always come when you call. Practice
on a long line. HOT TIP: Do not immediately take your dog off-lead
when you get to the park. Practice some obedience to remind him of the
rules, then let him off leash only if he can handle it.
