In your lifetime, try to be the person your pet thinks you are.

There are two means of refuge from the miseries of life: music and cats. - Albert Schweitzer

One reason a dog can be such a comfort when you're feeling blue is that he doesn't try to find out why.-Unknown

I care not for a man's religion whose dog and cat are not the better for it. - Abraham Lincoln

"Dogs need to sniff the ground; it's how they keep abreast of current events. The ground is a giant dog newspaper, containing all kinds of late-breaking dog news items, which, if they are especially urgent, are often continued into the next yard." Dave Barry

** A NOTE FROM DONNA **

One of my pet peeves is puppy mills. A subscriber sent me a link that
allows you to sign a petition to stop this extreme form of physical and
psychological distress for dogs. Puppy mills supply pet stores and research
laboratories with a steady stream of animals. It's totally inhumane and
needs to be stopped. If you'd like to learn more or sign the petition,
here's the link shared by Rosa Brown.

TUNA FOR CATS? NO!

Tuna can be fatal to cats and is not something to be fed to them. I use the
broth from tuna to administer herbs at times or for a special treat.

The human variety of tuna fish contains an enzyme that destroys vitamin B1
(thiamine). Cats who regularly eat tuna can develop a vitamin B1 deficiency,
which results in neurological symptoms like dilated eyes, loss of
equilibrium, seizures and death if this vitamin is not replaced. The
scientific name of this disease is polioencephlomalacia.

Clearwater veterinarian Richard Brancato said that though most domestic cats
do enjoy fish, feeding them a diet of only tuna can cause serious disorders.

Although it is high in protein, tuna lacks sufficient amounts of certain
amino acids, mainly taurine, to maintain feline health. There is
insufficient calcium to balance the phosphorus; the ratio in canned tuna is
1-to-14.8. This results in bone disease.

Many essential vitamins such as A and most B vitamins are also lacking,
Brancato said. A common disease in cats fed a mainstay of canned tuna is
steatitis, or yellow fat disease, an inflammation of the fat tissue in the
body due to a deficiency of vitamin E.

RABBITS IN LABOR

"I use Raspberry leaves for rabbits in labor. When they are ready to give
birth, I give the does just a leaf or two to stimulate labor. I give
raspberry leaf tea if they are late or not progressing well in their labors.
I squirt the tea into their mouths if they are too exhausted to eat the
leaves." Kellie

** HEALTH FOOD FOR PETS **

Health food for pets? Of course! If you believe that
what you eat makes a difference in "your" health,
then surely you can see why pets are getting so many
of the diseases of humans. What they use for pet
food is disgusting! It can't be food when you think
about the price you pay for it. Real food is essential
for good health in pets. We switched over 20 years
ago and have rarely had a vet bill. Healthy eating
produces a healthy animal. They also eat so much less
when they eat real food. Try the difference! Flint

DOG TOO ACTIVE & DISOBEDIENT
From: Tip World
http://www.topica.com/tipworld - Dog Training
Dog Training

QUESTION:
Subscriber Amanda writes, "Lucy-the-wonder-Doberman is almost two
years old. Despite the huge backyard to run in and frequent dog park
outings, she just is overactive to the point that it's out of control.
I've tried basic training classes--she's great there, but as soon as
we leave, she won't listen to me. She thinks the house is hers, and
the crate training I've been giving her since she was ten weeks old
has proved worthless. I constantly wear the battle scars of her
overactive playing and it really is limiting having people over or
taking her places... I need a way to let my "Lucy-fur" know that I
love her, but I'm the boss."

ANSWER:
Patience, patience, patience, dear Amanda. Large breeds turning two
are usually hitting their last stages of puppydom and are quite a
handful. They test a lot and can be quite trying. Your dog sounds like
she needs even more exercise. Have you considered taking more
obedience classes, but ones that are geared toward "fun control" of
your dog, such as agility or flyball? Without knowing more about your
situation, it doesn't sound like Lucy is convinced that you are the
boss since her behavior changes as soon as you leave dog training
class. A few private dog training sessions with the right one-on-one
dog trainer (where she or he teaches you some tricks for letting Lucy
know you're the one in the driver's seat) might be a worthy
investment.
