information to those of you who are animal lovers beyond your pets.

RINGLING BROTHERS CHARGED WITH ELEPHANT ABUSE
"Lawsuit Against Circus Based on Endangered Species Act"

The reports of routine chaining and beatings are based on several recent
eye-witness accounts by Ringling Bros employees who recently left the circus
and who have submitted sworn testimony to the to the U.S. Department of
Agriculture that elephants are routinely kept in chains for as long as 20
hours a day, and that, from the time they are babies, they are beaten and
repeatedly hit and prodded with sharp bullhooks in order to "break" them and
make them perform " tricks" in the circus. Get the whole story here:

VITAMIN C AND GARLIC FOR PETS

Dietary supplements in pets help to maintain health and help with the
healing process for a sick animal. Two of the most common items used for
pets are Vitamin C and Garlic.

VITAMIN C has been known to speed healing of tissue and helps to promote a
healthy immune system response. It is also good for the circulatory system
and helps to make bones and joints strong. Vitamin C has been used to
decrease the risk of cancer also. Dogs product some Vitamin C, while cats
do not. Vitamin C does not store in the body and needs continual
supplementation. The book recommends 100 mg. of Vitamin C each day for
every 11 pounds of body weight.

GARLIC is a popular remedy for animals and humans. It has been used to
improve circulatory problems, build the immune system and fight viruses and
bacteria. It has a very wide range of action in the body. One of the uses
in pets is for its anti-parasitic properties. It tends to purge those pesky
critters you don't want inside your pet. It is also good for digestion.
You can ad chopped garlic to your pets food, or use capsules if your animal
isn't fond of the smell. Prove 1/3 to one whole clove of garlic or the
equivalent for your pet depending on whether it's a small dog/cat or a
larger breed.

had such wonderful results for others besides the person

TEACHING FIDO TO SPEAK

QUESTION:
"Do you have any suggestions on how to train your dog to speak? I have three
dogs. Two of them speak on command, so I put all three in a row using every
treat, including pigs ears and hot dogs, but still the one dog won't make a
peep. She is a barker--every little thing sets her off. One of your topics
said to try controlling the barking by teaching her to speak on command. I
have been doing this for two months, 10 minutes a day, and she isn't getting
it. What should I do?"

ANSWER:
What do you do with the proffered treat when she doesn't bark? Are
you, by any chance, giving it to her anyway? In other words, is she
inadvertently getting rewarded for not barking when you give the
command?

You said she's a big barker, just not on command. Try commanding
"Speak!" when she barks and immediately rewarding her. She should get
the point pretty quickly. There's nothing easier than assigning a
command to something the dog is already doing!

For those of you who have a dog who doesn't bark at all, but who you'd
like to teach to bark on command, we have a friend who was training
her dog for search and rescue. The dog rarely barked, and this friend
really needed her to learn to bark on command to fulfill one of the
training requirements. Every day, this friend held out a biscuit and
said "Speak!" The dog really wanted the treat but didn't bark. Our
friend hated to do this (it broke her heart), but she would just put
the biscuit away. She did this every day for about two weeks and then
one day, all the frustration in the dog built up and she barked when
the friend went to put the biscuit away. The dog immediately got the
biscuit.

As always, be careful what you wish for. A non-barking dog can be a
joy!
