"Dogs need to sniff the ground; it's how they keep abreast of current events. The ground is a giant dog newspaper, containing all kinds of late-breaking dog news items, which, if they are especially urgent, are often continued into the next yard." Dave Barry

** A NOTE FROM DONNA **

Death is never easy to handle emotionally and when a
pet has died that has been a part of your family -- or
sometimes even all the family you had -- it is a tragic
and devastating event.

There are grief counseling hotlines that you can call
with people who are qualified to guide you through
your loss. Nothing will ever replace the pet that has
died, but you must move onward with life and sometimes
a phone call and conversation can help you do that.

Huggers to those who have lost a pet - it's tough, but
life does go on. There are many more willing animals
ready to receive your love.

DOG ANATOMY

It's important to know what you can about your own
health, so it's certainly important to learn what you
can about your dog's health also. Learning a bit about
anatomy will take you a long way when you need to
help your dog with a health problem.

** SUCCESS STORY **

DANDELION MADE MY BUNNIES GLOW WITH HEALTH!

"I have been giving my rabbits Dandelion leaves every morning for the last
two weeks. Two (2) leaves to my Dwarfs and four (4) leaves to my Mini Rex
and 6 to 8 leaves to my Flemish. After two weeks they all seem to glow! They
are eating well, increased drinking, their fur is looking great and
recovering from moult in fine fashion - not lingering in moulting for weeks
and missing the shows. I now have a little "dandie" garden, because I can't
believe the extreme changes with my concentrated efforts of daily dandelion
leaves." Deanna

** BEHAVIORAL/EMOTIONAL TIP **

LITTERBOX PROBLEMS

This is one of the most common behavioral problems for cats. It is the
cause for many cats being removed from a home. To resolve the issues, it is
helpful to think about the problem from the cat's point of view.

Cats like a clean place to urinate and defecate. They are tidy animals.
Think about some dirty bathrooms you've seen and made the decision you
didn't want to use them. It's important to have a clean litter box for use.

They also like privacy. If the litterbox is in an area with a lot of
activity, some cats will not use it. Think of people. Some people are very
modest and prefer using even a public rest room when nobody is there.

If you have more than one cat, it may be helpful to have more than one
litterbox. It's easier to have a clean one for use especially if you work
and are gone most of the day.

Besides making the litterbox and area appealing for use, you may also want
to make the place they are choosing to use unattractive. Cleaning the area
is of key importance. An enzymatic cleaner is best and then placing plastic
or aluminum foil over the area if possible.

It's possible a cat prefers a particular area of the home to eliminate in.
If possible you could try switching the litterbox to that place till they
get used to using it and then gradually move it to where you want it.

Cats may not be using the litter pan because they are ill. Cystitis (a
bladder infection or inflammation) is a common problem that can lead to
litter pan aversion. One theory is that the cat associates the litter pan
with the painful sensation or urinating with this disease and avoids it.

Some anatomical defects can lead to an increased need to urinate frequently.
Diseases that increase the need to urinate, like diabetes and
hyperthyroidism should be ruled out if that seems appropriate. Disorders
that might affect a cat's ability to get to the litter pan, like low
potassium levels in the bloodstream or arthritis need to be considered.

If there are no medical problems and good litter pan maintenance is in
place, then the problem is more likely to be behavioral.

Some cats are not using the litter pan because they are marking territory.
This can occur in either male or female cats. It is more common in cats in
multi-cat households, especially if there are five or more cats. It can
occur when an inside cat is bothered by frequent appearances of an outside
cat at the windows. In this case, limiting access to seeing the other cat
can help. If a cat is not neutered, this should be done first. Neutering is
often helpful, even after urine marking (spraying) behavior is established.
Currently, it is estimated that 80 to 90% of cats will stop urine marking
within a couple of months after neutering.
