** A NOTE FROM DONNA **
I mentioned fruit being a problem for dogs in a previous issue and had a few
comments since some dog food recipes include fruit. It appears moderation
is the key. Here's an update on the topic for those of you interested:
In response to reports last winter of dogs allegedly developing kidney
failure after eating large amounts of grapes or raisins, the ASPCA Animal
Poison Control Center conducted a review of all related cases in its
database. Veterinary toxicologists found that all the canines developed
vomiting within six hours of ingestion; the estimated amounts of grapes or
raisins eaten ranged from 9 oz. to 2 lbs. Other commonly reported signs
included diarrhea, anorexia, lethargy and abdominal pain; all of the dogs
developed evidence of kidney disfunction. After aggressive treatment
including intravenous fluids and medications, half of the dogs recovered,
while the others died or had to be euthanized.
At present, the exact role of grapes or raisins in these cases is still
unclear. Says Jill A. Richardson, DVM, "We are investigating this further,
in an attempt to determine the causative agents or disease processes. All of
the cases involved dogs eating large amounts of grapes and raisins--so for
this reason, we do recommend that pet owners make sure their dog doesn't
have the opportunity to do so."
Have a tail-wagging week!

CARE FOR ORPHANED KITTENS
Orphaned or rejected kittens are quite a challenge to care for, and the
chances of saving them are directly proportional to their age when
abandoned. Once in a while, a mother cat will reject one or all of her
kittens. Rejection of the whole litter is usually due to shock or some other
psychological problem. If only one kitten in the litter is rejected, it is
usually found to have some serious defect, and seldom survives even if it is
given intensive care. Get details on feeding and care of orphaned kittens:

EAR MITES & TICKS
"I use Tea Tree Oil for ear mites. It's great for fur mites too. It is
antiseptic, antibacterial and antifungal. It even works for ticks by putting
the oil directly on the tick until it's dead. Then remove it; it will heal
the hole also. Good for acne, warts and a lot more." Cheryl

**CAN YOU MAKE YOUR PET HEALTHIER?**
What we eat truly does make what our body is.
That applies to dogs and cats also. For the sake
of your pet, please learn more about what's in the
pet food YOU use. For most brands, it is not what
we would call food. Save on vet bills and heartaches.

** BEHAVIORAL/EMOTIONAL TIP **
CAT BITING HAIR
Mike Richards, DVM
http://www.vetinfo.com
Vet Info
Q: Dr. Mike, My male cat , about 6 years old, is biting out his hair on the
sides of his body (about 3" in diameter). Thre are no fleas, appetite is
good & there appear to be no other symptoms. He then swallows his hair &
coughs on it. Do you have any ideas why he might be biting his own hair
out? No scratching is involved. Thanks, L.
A: Lots of cats bite at themselves instead of scratching when they are
itchy. I would consider this to be an itchy condition until it is possible
to prove otherwise. The most common cause of this sort of behavior in my
practice is allergy -- either flea allergy or inhalant allergy. Mite
infestation occasionally occurs in cats and is a possible cause of this sort
of behavior. Some cats do seem to have "pyschogenic" hairloss, in which
they
deliberately chew their hair for reasons of stress, compulsive disorder or
some other pyschological cause.
