** A NOTE FROM DONNA **
HOT...HOT...HOT...Watch your dogs and kitties for signs of heat
exhaustion, and make sure they stay cool and have plenty of
water available. For cats, wiping them down with a moist towel
helps to keep them cool on the hottest days.
For dogs, consider adding a small children's pool to the yard.
If you have two dogs you will be amazed how much they will
play in it. They can still exercise, but be cool while doing so.
I've received some input on the raisins and dog issue that I think
you will be interested in.
Comments from a subscriber, Sandra Duke:
"I am writing in response to your newsletter article about raisins and
poisoning. I am glad to know that this is something to watch out for in
large amounts. I wanted to let you know that I have had amazing results
with raisins in small amounts. I had a dog who had been injured before I
met him. He had gotten to where he wasn't walking at all, and after eating
raisins (within a few hours) he got up and walked again. I continued to
give them to him with his meals, and he always did better when he had them.
If I forgot to give them to him he didn't do as well. I don't know why they
helped, but I would hate for people to be scarred off of the value they seem
to have in SMALL amounts (I gave him about a handful a day)."
As with everything in life, moderation is the key!

SUMMER HEALTH ALERT:
8 COMMANDMENTS OF FLEA CONTROL
Ask any companion animal caretaker who has waged a war against fleas--they
don't call them 'pests' for nothing. Now that we're deep in the heart of
flea season, it's best to put safety first when using flea-control
products..
It could save the life of your pet!
* Read all instructions on the label before using any flea-control product
on your pet.
* Never use insecticide on very young, pregnant, debilitated or elderly
animals without consulting your veterinarian.
* Never use flea-control products that contain permethrin on your cats,
unless they are specifically labeled for use on domestic felines.
* Take care when using sprays, shampoos or mousse near your pet's eyes and
ears.
* If you're using a fogger or home-premise spray, remove all pets from the
area for the period specified on the container. Air out the household
before allowing your animals to return.
* Consider using insect growth regulators, such as lufenuron and
methoprene. Not only do these products help break the life cycle of the
flea, they have minimal adverse effects.
* Just because a product is labeled "all natural" does not mean it is
completely safe. Many such products--including those with citrus extracts
like d-limonene and linalool--can be harmful when used inappropriately.
* Observe your pet closely after using flea-control products; report any
unusual behavior to your veterinarian.
For more information, visit http://www.apcc.aspca.org/. The APCC, the
first and only non-profit animal-dedicated poison control center in North
America, offers an emergency hotline--1-888-4-ANI-HELP--providing
round-the-clock telephone assistance.

LOTS OF ENERGY - MAGNIFICENT FUR
"Chautauqua, the yellow Lab, and Seneca, the black Lab, love their new
Flint
River Ranch food. It has given them loads of extra energy, their coats are
gorgeous, and they seem happier. Chautauqua gained about 10 lbs but Seneca
gained none and they eat in separate rooms. So Chautauqua is on a reduced
amount. The cats did not like their food initially, but are getting used to
the fact that they have to eat it with a little something else added in.
Their furs are magnificent now." Cynthia - Silver Spring, MD

**CAN YOU MAKE YOUR PET HEALTHIER?**
What we eat truly does make what our body is.
That applies to dogs and cats also. For the sake
of your pet, please learn more about what's in the
pet food YOU use. For most brands, it is not what
we would call food. Save on vet bills and heartaches.

** BEHAVIORAL/EMOTIONAL TIP **
HOW TO CREATE A MOTIVATING TOY
Clicker Training Tip
Many times in agility training the need will arise to use a toy to motivate
your dog to move on without you (example; teaching a "get out" or doing
weave poles or any sequence of obstacle for a gamble). People will often
lament that their dog is not "into" toys. Some dogs will not innately
want
to play with toys but you can create the desire within them with a little
work on your part.

DO YOU SUPPORT ANIMAL RESEARCH?
Charitiesinfo.org seeks to promote informed giving, advocate higher
standards for ethics and effectiveness in health research, and enable the
public to make sound, compassionate giving choices. Many people do not
realize that when they donate to a health charity, they may be helping to
fund disturbing experiments that have little to do with helping those in
