"Dogs need to sniff the ground; it's how they keep abreast of current events. The ground is a giant dog newspaper, containing all kinds of late-breaking dog news items, which, if they are especially urgent, are often continued into the next yard." Dave Barry

** A NOTE FROM DONNA **

Most people who have pets are animal lovers. There is a lot of abuse in
this world, but it's always best to think of the good and positive things,
if you want to make a difference. Thinking about the evil and negative will
prevent you from having any hope in the world at all.

I visited a site last week: China Bear Rescue - This group is working with
the Chinese government to free 500 Moon Bears that have been farmed for
bile. There are herbal alternatives for Chinese Medicine that does not have
to include animal abuse.

One person vowed to make a difference and she certainly has! This site
isn't one of those with awful pictures that prevent you from reading
any content. It's a site with lots of hope and good stories with pictures
of what's being done.

You can even play a small or large part in the rescue. One way is to
provide a "pot of honey" for $5. With your gift these bears will taste this
sweet nectar for the first time in their lives. Not only is it offered as a
treat, but to also tempt the bears during their physiotherapy when
encouraged to climb frames to stretch their limbs. Could therapy ever be
sweeter? You can even feed a bear for an entire week for $12.

COOL, FRESH WATER FOR PETS

"We live in Texas, and as everybody knows, it's right hot here. I read the
I-Won tip today about ice cubes in the dog water bowl. I go a step
further. When you have a plastic juice bottle empty, fill it 3/4 full with
water and freeze it without the lid on. When it's frozen , put the lid on,
and drop it in the dog bowl. It will not melt as fast as ice cubes. When
treveling with dogs (I travel alone with 5), I freeze a large plastic bottle
or even a gallon milk jug. I put it in the trunk for the trip, wrapped in
towels and it stays cool and slowly thaws to provide cool, fresh water for
your pets. and than put it in the trunk, wrapped into some towels, it will
stay cool , and as it slowly de-freezes, it makes fresh water for your pet.
We once had a cat that pushed her waterdish around, scaping the floor,
untill we put ice cubes in her water. She would not touch her water
otherwise." Submitted by B.U.

** BEHAVIORAL/EMOTIONAL TIP **

WHEN YOUR DOG TRIES TO BE LEADER OF THE PACK
From http://www.TipWorld.com

Dogs can be controlling in many different ways. They will always take
as much as they can get and, if you don't set some limits, problems
develop. Examples of ways dogs can control (and dominate) their owners
include barking demandingly, disobeying commands, and requiring your
constant attention.

In order to be "leader of your pack," you must be a fair, benevolent,
but firm leader. When the dog tests your authority (which any dog is
apt to do in varying degrees), you must respond. A lack of response on
your part will be interpreted as permission to continue by your dog
(for example, to continue chewing the rug). In the next few tips,
we'll look at some of the things you can do to prevent your dog from
taking control of your relationship:

- Do obedience sessions twice a day; five to ten minutes each. Sit,
down, stay, and come are the four basics. Remember, obedience is like
speaking dog language. It's a way of establishing your authority in a
non-violent manner. Pause a significant amount of time between each
command. Be precise. Sit means sit. Down means down.

- The dog should be walked or run in a safe area at least two times
each day. This gets his or her ya-yas out and lowers anxiety levels.
Think of how much better you feel when you are on a regular exercise
program for yourself. If you can't do it yourself, hire a dog walker!

- There is evidence that a low-protein diet can help hyperactive and
dominant dogs. Dry food should have a protein percentage of 16 to 20
percent. (Read the back of the bag.) Cut out canned food. But note
that certain medical conditions such as pregnancy require more
protein--check with your vet and trainer for more information.

**CAN YOU MAKE YOUR PET HEALTHIER?**

What we eat truly does make what our body is.
That applies to dogs and cats also. For the sake
of your pet, please learn more about what's in the
pet food YOU use. For most brands, it is not what
we would call food. Save on vet bills and heartaches.
