** A NOTE FROM RANDAL **
Recently, I recorded a program that deals with issues of the law. It
featured one of the stars running over a ladies pet (Trust Me! - Read On!).
It turns out the pet was a robotic dog. During the program another lawyer
gets involved and files suit for the duress the elderly lady is suffering
without her "Robbie." The story ends with another star of the show taking
a
new robotic dog (that she previously refused because it wasn't like her
"Robbie") and implanting Robbie's chip in the new dog. The new robotic
dog
acts just like the old "Robbie." The lady is satisfied and the suit
is
dropped. Although, this was a show it illustrates the point that robotic
animals can play with our emotions and cause grief upon their loss.
Below is an excerpt from an article on the net that shows some research is
being done with robotic pets and how they effect children. I think there is
a small but limited place for the robotic animals. However, I also feel
that they must not be marketed to take the place of our beloved pets. I
have a concern if they do, then many years from now we will realize that our
pet friends gave us much more than movement, tricks or recognition. They
gave us apart of themselves and NO ROBOTIC PET can do that.
Here is the article, hope you are having a great month. Let me know what
you think.
Until next time,
Randal

SEATTLE - They wag their tails, chase after balls and respond well to gentle
pats on the head, but can these robotic pooches live up to the role real
pets play in children's lives?
That's one of the questions two University of Washington researchers are
trying to answer in a study examining how kids interact with Aibo (news -
web sites), a sleek, cat-sized robotic dog Sony first released three summers
ago.

**SUCCESS STORIES**
GERBIL SUCCESSES
I recently had several gerbils that suddenly had health problems. One
gerbil had scent gland tumors, another had a tumor in its ears, and another
had sinus infection that bled through its nose. This all happened in one
day! Not knowing what to do and finding that there was really no cure for
the scent gland tumor, except to cut it off at the vet....I decided to try
herbs for all of them.
I put bee pollen in all of their water...they are in separate tanks. Also,
I treated them with Tea Tree Oil topically.

I put tea tree oil in the ears of the gerbil that had tumors in its ear. Gerbils
become contorted, walk crooked and loose their balance with an ear tumor. Additionally,
they become very scared since they can't protect and manuever like normal.
After a week of bee pollen in their water, I switched the water. I then put
valerian root in their water. Within 3-4 days the "cauliflower looking"
tumor that grew on the outside of the gerbils tummy was no longer
protruding. In fact, I thought the gerbil had escaped because I could not
see the tumor anymore! It is even continuing to get better.

The gerbil with the ear tumor has straightened out a little bit with the valerian
root water. I am still continuing the tea tree oil in his ear.
His appetite is very good and he rests easier now.
The gerbil with the infection in his nose was quite interesting. The cage
was covered in blood....only it was not blood....they put out a red colored
puss to ward off infections naturally. He is fine and back to normal. No
more bleeding or infection.
Afterwards, one cage of gerbils began fighting. Instead of separating them,
I treated their water with valerian root. They have quit fighting each other and
now fight over the water bottle. They really love it! Thanks for your help! No
vet bills. I had the valerian and the tea tree oil on hand. The gerbils love the
valerian water! JC

** BEHAVIORAL/EMOTIONAL TIP **
HOW TO GENTLE A KITTEN
"Gentling" a kitten not only helps strengthen your bond with him, but
sets the pace for his acceptance as an adult cat to routine treatments such
as clipping claws, brushing teeth, and examining his ears.

DESENSITIZING YOUR DOG TO LOUD NOISES
When thunder rolls and lightning flashes, do you look around for best
friend. After a few minutes of searching, you find your dog cowering under
the kitchen table, his tremours more and more pronounced as the thunder gets
louder. Minutes are spent fruitlessly trying to coax him out, and in the end
you give up. Is this a familiar scenario?

ANIMAL PROTECTION INSTITUTE
API's Mission is to advocate for the protection of animals from cruelty and
