** A NOTE FROM RANDAL **
It's hot here in Virginia and we have enjoyed all the pretty flowers and
bushes that are in bloom. Additionally, we have been busy taking over a new
website. Its called The Frugal Life. The website is at
http://www.thefrugallife.com
The site is designed to present frugal ideas and serve as
a resource to find
frugal tips for all kinds of categories. A friend of ours, that Donna met
on line, gave it to us about a month ago.
We have been living frugally since 1987 and found that it
was a natural fit.
Lastly, please take a look at the article below. You might notice someone
that doesn't know the danger of leaving a pet in a car. With the
information from the article you might present some facts that just might
save their pet from a heat related illness.
HOT CARS ARE TROUBLE FOR DOGS:
We have all seen dogs and other companion animals who are left inside cars
outside of stores while their well-meaning guardians ³run in for a few
minutes.Å What these otherwise caring people dont realize is that on a
hot and humid day, the temperature inside a car rises very quickly. On an
85-degree day, for example, the temperature inside a car with the windows
opened slightly can reach 102 degrees within 10 minutes. After 30
minutes, the temperature will reach 120 degrees. On warmer days, it will
get even hotter. Every year pets left in this situation suffer
irreversible brain damage or death.
WHAT YOU CAN DO:
The HSUS has educational posters, available for a nominal fee ($3 for 10/
$5 for 25), that store managers can post inside their windows to remind
shoppers that ³Leaving Your Pet in a Parked Car Can be a Deadly Mistake.Å
Similar, 4Å x 9Å hot car flyers are also available (100 for $8). To order,
or for a free sample of flyers, contact dlauer@humanesociety.org
Until next time,
Randal

** HEALTH/HERBAL INFO **
CANINE HIP DYSPLASIA
Over the past several decades, dog breeders have come to rely on the
diagnostic methods of the Orthopedic Foundation for Animals (OFA) and their
rating system to screen breeding stock and breed only those individuals
devoid of CHD in order to reduce incidence of CHD in future offspring.
Despite these attempts and the OFA's encouraging reports of a significant
decline in occurrence of breed-specific CHD, there still remains a very high
prevalence of CHD not accounted for by the OFA. Additionally, frequency of
CHD in offspring from OFA normal parents still remains disappointingly high.

**SUCCESS STORIES**
BANDIT PASSES TEST ANOTHER TIME
Bandit is featured on the page http://www.theherbsplace.com/heartworm.html
We just got word that he went back for his two year checkup and he tested
negative for heartworms again. Isn't that great! Below I have a request
that any of you that have tried the heartworm program to send us your
results. Thanks - Randal
HAVE YOU USED THE NATURAL HEARTWORM PROGRAM?
We're collecting feedback from those who have used the natural alternative
for a heartworm program - whether as a preventative or to get rid of
heartworms. We're very excited to have gotten reports of dogs testing free
of heartworms after the program, so we want to know about others and put
them on the site to encourage others just beginning. You don't need to be a
writer to let us know. Just give us a few of your own words and we can edit
it and send it back to you for approval. We just wanna get the word out
there for other dogs.
You might like to know that Robin, Bandit's mom, and the lady who took the
time to do a website about her success, has been interviewed by Whole Dog
Journal, so the story will be getting out even further. Robin is still
giving input on the story, so your story could be part of the article!
We've redone the heartworm site, so take a look and get excited with us!

WEANING YOUR DOG FROM THE CRATE
Crates are very good training tools. Not everyone needs to use a crate for their
dog, but everyone who has trained their dog to use the crate should
also, at some point in time, wean their dog from his crate. This does not mean
that your dog will never be able to use his crate again, many dogs find their
crates to be a secure refuge.

WHERE TO GO TO ADOPT A CAT
Depending on your needs, there are a number of alternatives for adoption. If you
want a kitty companion to love and cherish, a shelter or rescue organization would
be splendid. If you're leaning toward a specific breed there are other alternatives.
We discuss all of them here.
