A NOTE FROM RANDAL
******************
We are VERY EXCITED!
We've just launched an entirely new site for pets!
There's already 200 pages of content on there and we'll be
adding to it.
This has been a fun project to design the site [Donna's arena] and get all
the techy stuff working [my role]. I will also need to keep it running, so
if you see any errors or problems, PLEASE let me know! There's a contact us
link on the site or you can reply to this email. Even if you can't spend
any time there right now, click this link since it will help our search
engine placement. http://www.healthypetcorner.com
Healthy Pet Corner
The NEW SITE has information for dogs, cats, horses, birds,
rabbits, and
reptiles. More pets to be added. All the Natural Pet Newsletters are
archived there and are accessible with the search engine.
PLEASE SEND US your favorite pet links for us to look at.
We're also
looking to swap pet links if you've got a site.
CHECK IT OUT and please let us know what you think! We'd like
your comments!

DOGS SHOWN TO REACT TO MUSIC
by Lisa R. Kindel
Two recent studies have shown that the behavior of dogs can
be affected by
the type of music they are hearing.
When a team of researchers led by Deborah Wells, an animal
behaviorist
employed by Queens University in Belfast, Northern Island, exposed 50 dogs
in an animal shelter to Vivaldis The Four Seasons, Greigs Morning
and
other classical pieces, the dogs became calm and laid down.
When the researchers played music by Metallica and other heavy metal bands,
the dogs became agitated and began barking.
Pop music and radio talk shows seemed to have little effect.
A similar research project conducted at the Rehoming Center of the National
Canine Defense League in Evesham, England yielded comparable results.
"It is well established that music can influence our moods," said Wells.
"Dogs may be as discerning as humans when it comes to music."
"Dogs have a taste in musical styles just as people do," said Alison
Jaskiewicz, cofounder of the Canine Freestyle Federation, which is dedicated
to broadening the scope of dog training by adding choreography to it. "If
you move dogs to different types of music, you will see their preferences
reflected in their bodies, in their eagerness to move, in their tail set, in
their ear set, etc." © 2002 Animal News Center, Inc.

IS YOUR HOME POISONING YOU AND YOUR PET?
Did you know many household cleaners contain a chemical called formaldehyde
(also known as embalming solution), which could cause severe irritation to
our pet's eyes, throat and skin? Or how about rug and carpet shampoos, they
contain a chemical called perchloroethylene, which can cause dizziness,
insomnia, nausea, tremors and loss of appetite?

ANOTHER APPROACH TO CORRECTING LEASH PULLING
Many dogs are given up into rescue because they will not walk on a loose
leash. This page describes a simple technique to correcting leash pulling.. I
have used this method on many dogs, even very large strong dogs. They
usually "get it" in about three short lessons, but of course you need
to
reinforce the training over a period of weeks. Teach controlled walking
before you go on to formal heeling; your job will be much easier. This is a
very humane and effective way to teach a dog to walk on a loose leash.

DESTRUCTIVE SCRATCHING IN CATS
It's normal for cats to scratch objects in their environment for many
reasons: (1) to remove the dead outer layer of their claws, (2) to mark
their territory by leaving both a visual mark and a scent (3) to stretch
their bodies and flex their feet and claws, and (4) to work off energy.
Because scratching is a normal behavior, and one that cats are highly
motivated to display, it's unrealistic to try to prevent them from
scratching. Instead, the goal in resolving scratching problems is to
redirect the scratching onto acceptable objects.

SPAY/NEUTER POSTAGE STAMPS STILL NEED YOUR SUPPORT
A five-year writing campaign brought the Spay/Neuter postage stamps into
existence, and if we want the U.S. Postal Service to issue more animal
advocacy stamps in the future, we need to show them that this type of
stamp does indeed sell.
We animal lovers need to maintain interest in sales of the
stamps through
September of 2003. Please be sure to use the Spay/Neuter stamp on all of
your mail! Stamps are available for purchase from your local post office or
online at www.usps.com. For more info on the stamps visit this website:

GOOD NEWS PET STORY

MISSING BIRD RETURNED TO OWNER AFTER SAYING NAME
by Alex Tamargo
A Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals staff
member
recently was able to return a parrot in Swindon, England to his owner after
the bird said his name.
After responding to a request to pick up a brightly colored
green parrot
that was on a fence in someones backyard, Debbie Sheppard found that the
bird liked to "laugh and squawk," but was not able to learn where hed
come
from, or to whom, if anyone, he belonged.
So, Sheppard brought the parrot to her home. Soon afterward,
he began
talking. Among the phrases he used were "kiss, kiss," "tickle,
tickle" and
"good boy."
The bird also repeatedly said "Basil." Sheppard
believed that Basil might be
his name, and so contacted local police. She learned from them that a parrot
named Basil had been reported missing the previous day.
After getting the name and telephone number of the person whod made the
report, Sheppard reunited Basil with Ann Bradley, whod been his owner for
approximately three years. © 2002 Animal News Center, Inc.
