DOG LOVERS TO DECIDE IF BARK IS WORTH THE BITE
ATLANTA (Reuters) - If you're wondering why your pooch howls at the moon,
growls at the mailman or barks uncontrollably at squirrels, the answer may
be only a click away.
A Japanese toy maker claims to have developed a gadget that translates dog
barks into human language and plans to begin selling the product -- under
the name Bowlingual -- in U.S. pet stores, gift shops and retail outlets
this summer.
Tokyo-based Takara Co. Ltd. says about 300,000 of the dog translator devices
have been sold since its launch in Japan late last year. It is forecasting
far bigger sales once an English-language version comes to America in
August.
The United States is home to about 67 million dogs, more than six times the
number in Japan.
"We know that the Americans love their dogs so much, so we don't think they
will mind spending $120 on this product," Masahiko Kajita, a Takara
marketing manager, said during an interview at a recent pet products
convention in Atlanta.
Cited as one of the coolest inventions of 2002 by Time magazine, Bowlingual
consists of a 3-inch long wireless microphone that attaches to a dog collar
and transmits sounds to a palm-sized console that is linked to a database.
The console classifies each woof, yip or whine into six emotional categories
-- happiness, sadness, frustration, anger, assertion and desire -- and
displays common phrases, such as "You're ticking me off," that fit the
dog's
emotional state.
Takara says it has spent hundreds of millions of yen developing the device
in cooperation with acoustics experts and animal behaviorists and hopes to
sell 1 million units in the United States in the first eight months after
its launch.
It is undeterred by those who scoff at the idea of paying $120 to read a
dog's mind. "Of course people are always really skeptical at first, but once
they see a demo they are amazed and impressed," Takara spokesman Kennedy
Gitchel says.

TOXIC PRODUCTS - READ LABELS FOR SAFETY OF PETS
Learn to recognize how dangerous a toxic product really is. Pay particular
attention to the warning word used. The federal government has labeling
laws that tell you how dangerous those cleaning products really are. It
also acts as a disclaimer for the companies manufacturing them.
These are amounts related to humans, so consider how little it takes to be
deadly for your pets.
POISON/DANGER = very toxic - only a few drops could kill you
WARNING = moderately toxic - as little as a teaspoonful can kill
CAUTION = less toxic - two tablespoons to a cup could kill you
STRONG SENSITIZER = can cause multiple allergies
The Environmental Health Foundation lists the top four chemical groups that
we should reject and eliminate. They are:
pesticides
toxic gases (such as chlorine and ammonia)
heavy metals (such as lead and mercury)
volatile organic compounds (such as formaldehyde and solvents)
If we begin to eliminate these chemicals, we can make a difference in our
family's health and that of our beloved pets. They depend on us to keep
poisonous products out of their environment. Be safe, use products that
present no danger.

If you don't mind mixing your own solutions for various types of cleaning
products, like we do, Sunshine Concentrate does a lot of everything in the
home. We have replaced all of our chemical products down to the hand soaps
at our sinks. Sunshine Concentrate is all we use for laundry also. I don't
have to wonder if I left a bottle out, or if my clean floors are poisoning
our cats. Read more about Sunshine Concentrate here:

TRAVELING WITH YOUR DOG
Pack the car and off we go!
If you and Gizmo the Dog are planning on taking a long road trip anytime
during the year, here are a few things you should know, and a few items you
should definitely have in the car with you.
Things to do Before You Leave (Many days before ...)
* Acclimatize your dog to car travel - Start with short trips around
town, and make sure you end up some place fun for your dog. He needs to
learn that a car trip has a reward at the end, and this should put an end to
any reluctance when the time comes to "load up" for the big trip.
* Vaccinate your dog - Rabies vaccine, which your dog should have anyway,
but he needs it at least thirty days in advance of crossing the border from
any side.
Bordatella vaccines for Kennel Cough prevention, if you plan on boarding him
at any time. This should be done at least 4 weeks in advance. Lyme Vaccine
if you plan on entering an area where ticks are present.

CAT TRAINING/BEHAVIORAL HELP
***************************
THE FEARFUL CAT
When cats feel threatened, they usually respond in three ways to the object,
person or situation they perceive as a threat: fight, flee or freeze. Some
cats become so frightened they lose control of their bladder or bowels and
eliminate right where they are. Each cat has his/her preferred way of
dealing with a crisis. Youll notice that your cat probably tends to try
one
option first, and if that doesnt work, shes forced to try a different
option. For instance, if your cat is afraid of dogs and a friend brings his
dog to your home to visit, you might notice the following: first, your cat
puffs out her fur to make herself look big, then hisses and spits at the
dog. If the dog doesnt retreat, your cat may flee the situation, find a
hiding spot, and freeze until she deems the situation safe.
Your Cat May Show The Following Behaviors When She Is Fearful:
* Hiding
* Aggression (spitting, hissing, growling, piloerection, swatting, biting, scratching)
* Loss of control over bladder and/or bowels
* Freezing in place
Its normal for you to want to help and comfort your cat when shes
frightened. However, this isnt necessarily the best thing to do from your
cats point of view. Its normal for a cat to feel insecure or frightened
in
a new environment. Often, your new cat will hide for a day or two when you
first bring her home. Sometimes a traumatic experience like a visit to the
veterinarian, or introducing a new animal into the household, can disrupt
her routine and send her under the bed for a few days.
What Causes Fearful Behavior?
Youll need to closely observe your cat to determine the trigger for her
fearful behavior. Keep in mind that just because you know that the person or
animal approaching your cat has good intentions, doesnt mean that she feels
safe. The trigger for her fearful behavior could be anything. Some common
triggers are:
* A particular person
* A stranger
* Another animal
* A child
* Loud noises

HOMEOWNERS -- STAND UP FOR DOGS
In recent years, many homeowners have found themselves either unable to get
homeowner's insurance or have had their insurance cancelled, based solely on
the breed of the dog in their household. The HSUS is working to address this
problem and is gathering contact information and stories from those who have
experienced this dilemma. If you or someone you know has been denied
homeowner's insurance, or has been unable to obtain it based on the breed of
dog in the household, please contact The HSUS at
<mailto:companionanimals@hsus.org> for
a contact form.

GOOD NEWS PET STORY
*******************
POLICE DOG NABS HIGH-SPEED PURSUIT SUSPECT
A home invasion robbery suspect Tuesday led authorities on a high-speed
chase from Orange County to Rancho Penasquitos, where he tried to commandeer
other cars before a police dog put an end to his flight, 10News reported.
The chase, which began in the Irvine area, entered northern San Diego County
on Interstate 5 around noon, according to the California Highway Patrol.
The fleeing man, identified as Jerry Lee Franklin, (pictured, right) was
armed with a pellet gun and led sheriff's deputies through Camp Pendleton
and into Oceanside at speeds up to 130 mph before entering eastbound state
Route 78, 10News reported.
In the San Marcos area, the ground units pulled back from the pursuit due to
weather and traffic conditions, letting sheriff's helicopter crews take
over, the CHP reported.
Franklin then sped the stolen silver Toyota Avalon onto southbound I-15 and
continued on through Escondido and Rancho Bernardo.
A few miles to the south, he exited the freeway at Ted Williams Parkway and
drove into a residential area near Via San Marco, where he ditched the car
and a handgun, 10News reported.
