A NOTE FROM RANDAL

Hi Everyone,

We had something happen that has never happened before. We had an
earthquake yesterday. It registered 3.9 on the richter scale. It happened
about 18 miles from our house. I know if you are from California, that 3..9
happens regularly without much fanfare. However, in Virginia we are not
known for earthquakes and I have never been in one until now. One of the
cats jumped and went under the bed. The other one got to the end of the bed
and waited to see if it was going to happen again.

There was no more shaking so he stayed right there until he could tell it
was safe to move about again. Not being from an area that I would
experience earthquakes it made me wonder what are you supposed to do when
one happens? A neighbor called and asked if we had felt the trembles too..
Fortunately, she knew you were supposed to get under a doorway for
protection.

Hopefully, it won't happen again. Having experienced an earthquake it {ure
helps me to experience some of what you in other parts of the country go
through regularly.

CARMICHAEL DOG WIGGLES OUT OF JURY DUTY

A resident of Sacramento County recently heard the news that she would not
have to attend jury duty, and you could see how happy she was by how much
she wagged her tail.

Lucy Marie Gordon, a chocolate Labrador retriever that lives in Carmichael,
was recently summoned by Sacramento County for jury duty. Somehow, county
records show a registered voter named Lucille Marie Gordon at the Gordon
family address.

Lucy's owner, Caryn Gordon, thought it would be easy to resolve by phone;
however, a kourthouse staff member didn't believe her.

"I asked him what I needed to do to prove that she is a dog. And I said,
'Would a picture be sufficient?' And he said, 'No,'" Gordon said.

Gordon was told to get documentation from Lucy's vet.

WOMAN'S LARGE ESTATE TO ASSIST CATS, DOGS

WELLINGTON, New Zealand - In life, pet lover Aileen Milligan would roast
pork, feed the crispy skin to her dog and toss the remainder of the meat
over a cliff.

In death, she was even more generous to her four-legged friends.

Milligan, 78, left 3 million New Zealand dollars (US$1.7 million) in a trust
to look after cats and dogs in the southern city of Christchurch, according
to reports Monday.

Milligan and her late husband Robert Hartley Milligan had no children.

The money, from sales of two properties and other investments, was left in a
trust fund dedicated to animal well-being.

Animal welfare groups have been invited to apply for cash from the trust
fund.

Friends said Milligan's lifelong ambition had been to provide comfort for
stray dogs and cats.

"She loved animals so much," friend and former neighbor Georgina Hooker told
the Christchurch Press newspaper.

Another neighbor told the paper Milligan ould cook pork just so she could
feed her poodle, Flynn, the crackling and throw the rest of the meat into
the ocean.

Details of the trust are shrouded in secrecy, as Aileen Milligan had wanted
it that way.

"She was a very private woman ... she kept herself to herself," said her
lawyer, Phil Shamy.

Milligan died when her two-story home burnt down in September 2001.

The bequest to assist animals in Christchurch, 370 kilometers (230 miles)
south of the capital Wellington on South Island, is believed to be one of
the largest of its kind in New Zealand.
