I think some hot weather may be here to stay! Remember as it gets warmer to
not keep your pets in a hot car. Cars become much hotter than we might
think.

Regarding the article below, I am sure glad West Virginia has stepped up the
penalties for dog fighting. I think it's awful that people actually moved
there because of their previously liberal laws. I just hope they do the
same for cockfighting and then the other 3 states change their laws too.

We are always grateful for your readership and as always please remember to

TEENAGERS TEACHING PEERS ABOUT ANIMAL WELFARE

Teenagers in Wisconsin recently formed Students Working for Animal
Protection (SWAP), an animal welfare group dedicated to teaching young
people to have respect for all living things.

The group, which was formed in response to a number of recent killings of
animals by teenagers, is sponsored by the Ozaukee Humane Society (OHS).

"The underlying theme of SWAP is that no one has the right to hurt any
living thing," OHS Outreach Director Jean Lord told a Journal Sentinel
reporter. "We don't want people finding pleasure in shooting a hawk out of
the sky or using a dog to vent their emotions. We speak for peaceful
coexistence between all living things."

Lord, who also is the Executive Director of the Pine View Animal
Rehabilitation Center, said that teenagers who join SWAP receive more than
30 hours of training in order to provide them with information they in turn
will present at schools and meetings of civic organizations.

"I've seen terrible things that people have done to animals," said
17-year-old SWAP member Matt Winquist. "We need to teach people so they
(will be) more aware of how to treat animals properly."

DOG FIGHTING MADE A FELONY IN WEST VIRGINIA

West Virginia Governor Bob Wise recently signed into law a bill that makes conducting a dog fight a felony and attending such an event a misdemeanor.. Under the new law, individuals convicted of holding a dog fight are subject to imprisonment for between one and five years and being ordered to pay a fine of $1,000 to $5,000. In addition, persons convicted of being present at a dog fight are subject to imprisonment for as many as 12 months and being ordered to pay a fine of $100 to $1,000.

"Governor Wise is to be commended for giving West Virginia law enforcement another tool to combat dog fighting," said Humane Society of the United States Senior Vice President Wayne Pacelle. "West Virginia will no longer be an attractive destination for dog fighters to conduct this barbaric criminal activity."

Many dog fighters chose the state because it was one of only four in the
United States in which dog fighting was not a felony. The first draft of the
legislation also addressed cockfighting, but the provisions regarding it
were removed.

"There is no moral or practical rationale for treating dog fighting and
cockfighting any differently," said Humane Society of the United States
Great Lakes Regional Office Director Sandy Rowland. "The new felony law goes a long way to protect dogs and other animals, but West Virginia still needs to address the problem of cockfighting."

My miniature poodle was obviously not feeling well. She was shaking, cold,
