PETS IN THE NEWS
INQUISITIVE DOG AVERTS BOMB ATTACK
MARSEILLE, France (AFP) - A dog that happened upon a powerful home-made bomb
outside a bank in the French city of Marseille probably defused the device
when it started playing with it, police said.
The dog's two owners were taking it for a stroll shortly before midnight on
Saturday when it chanced upon a jerrycan containing an inflammable liquid
and wired up to several sticks of dynamite, placed in front of a bank, they
said.
The animal apparently decided to play with the device, thereby pulling it
apart.
Firefighters who were called in said the bomb, placed outside a branch of
the Credit Agricole bank in the La Joliette neighbourhood of Marseille,
would have caused considerable damage.
Although officials had no word on who might have placed the bomb, they said
it could well have been the work of nationalists from the nearby French
Mediterranean island of Corsica.

PREPARE YOUR PET FOR THE COLD
Cold weather is just around the corner, and our beloved pets will soon be
affected by it. Here are three simple ways to start preparing your cat or
dog for the cold now, to prevent health problems and discomfort later on.

DESTRUCTIVE CHEWING
Sooner or later every dog lover returns home to find some unexpected damage
inflicted by his or her dog...or, more specifically, that dog's incisors and
molars. Although dogs make great use of their vision and sense of smell to
explore the world, one of their favorite ways to take in new information is
to put their mouths to work.

AGE CONVERSION TO HUMAN YEARS FOR CATS
Veterinarians are often asked to compare the age of a cat in cat years to
its equivalent in human years. Although this exercise has been attempted
through one formula or another, there is no scientifically reliable method
for converting the age of one species into that of another. One piece of
information still lacking, for the general cat population, is accurate
mortality information: at what age, and from what, do cats die? The most
frequently cited causes of death in elderly cats are kidney failure, cancer,
and infectious disease. But just when, or even whether, these will become
problems depends upon a number of factors.
First, the environment: we do know that the average lifespan of feral, or
wild, tom cats is quite brief (approximately 3 years), while the
average
lifespan of neutered, indoor housecats can extend to the late teens or even
twenty years. Because feral cats are exposed to infectious diseases
(probably without the benefit of vaccination), automobiles, dogs and other
hazards, it is understandable that their average lifespan would be
relatively short. Second, genetic influences: the reported hardiness of
mixed breeds may be based in truth. Purebred and inbred cats are more likely
to have inherited problems and therefore may not live as long, as a group,
as their mixed breed cohorts. Genes also play a role in the tendency to
develop certain diseases, or the luckier tendency to avoid them.
Given these caveats, is there a roughly accurate conversion formula? One,
now outdated, formula has suggested that each human calendar year is
equivalent to seven cat years. Because a one-year-old cat is more physically
and behaviorally mature than a seven-year-old child, this has been
supplanted by the following rules of paw: the first two years of a cats
life are roughly equivalent to the first 25 years of a human life;
thereafter, each year is equivalent to 4 years. A 3 year old cat would be
29 years old. A 4 year old 33 and so on.

** DO YOU KNOW WHAT YOUR PET IS EATING? **
Many pet owners are discovering the horror of what is actually in the pet
foods they buy --- even the natural ones. What our pets eat makes a big
difference in their health and your emotions of seeing them suffer. Good
food takes away many common health problems that people are paying a lot of
vet bills to solve, such as, skin allergies, dry coat, lack of energy,
constant fleas and other parasites. Good food pays for itself in lower vet
bills and the animals eats (and poops) less.
