In your lifetime, try to be the person your pet thinks you are.

There are two means of refuge from the miseries of life: music and cats. - Albert Schweitzer

One reason a dog can be such a comfort when you're feeling blue is that he doesn't try to find out why.-Unknown

I care not for a man's religion whose dog and cat are not the better for it. - Abraham Lincoln

"Dogs need to sniff the ground; it's how they keep abreast of current events. The ground is a giant dog newspaper, containing all kinds of late-breaking dog news items, which, if they are especially urgent, are often continued into the next yard." Dave Barry

ANIMALS AND THE SAN DIEGO FIRES

The Escondido Humane Society will be accepting donations of pet food and
supplies as well as financial contributions for this fund.  Dry and canned
dog and cat food, and other animal supplies including bowls, and clean
bedding and towels are needed by residents throughout San Diego County who
have animals affected by the wildfires.  The society will receive, store and
disseminate food and supplies from its animal care center in Escondido.  All
monetary contributions should be made payable to the Escondido Humane
Society and designated to the October Fire Animal Care Fund.

According to Phil Morgan, Executive Director, "We want all injured animals
to receive proper veterinary care.  And, we do not want our community's
animals to go hungry.  By providing reimbursement for vet care, and donating
food and supplies to those in need, it is one less thing fire victims have
to worry about." Nutro Pet Food Company kicked off the Food Drive with a
donation of 250 bags of dog and cat good.

Cash contributions will be used to provide treatment for injured animals up
to $500 on a case by case basis.  The Animal Welfare Committee of the Board
of Director's will review all requests for funds and make decisions within a
day of receipt of the request.

Any San Diego County fire victim owning a pet is eligible to apply to
receive assistance from the October Fire Animal Care Fund, whether animals
have been injured, displaced or otherwise affected.

Donations for animal fire victims should be sent to the Escondido Humane
Society, 3450 E. Valley Parkway, Escondido, CA 92027.  Please mark your
check October Fire Animal Care Fund.  For more information, visit here

CAT SCRATCH DISEASE

Signs and Symptoms:
Cat scratch disease is an infection that causes swelling of the lymph nodes
(swollen glands) after an animal scratch - most often from a cat.

A blister or a small bump often develops 3 to 10 days after the scratch and
may be mistaken for an insect bite. The blister or bump at the site of a cat
scratch is called an inoculation lesion (injury site where germs enter the
body), and it is most commonly found on the arms and hands, head, and scalp.

The first clue to diagnosing this illness is history of exposure to a cat or
kitten. About 55% to 70% of people with the infection have a cat scratch
somewhere on their bodies.

Usually within 2 weeks of a cat scratch, lymph nodes close to the area of
the inoculation lesion will swell and become tender (lymph nodes are bean-
shaped organs of the immune system that are often called glands).

HELP MY DOG IS AFRAID OF CAR RIDES

Many dogs experience fear and anxiety when placed in a vehicle, and
unfortunately, not many know why. Part of it may be that the only time your
dog enters a vehicle is for a trip to a stressful location (veterinarian's
office, shelter, a place he dislikes for whatever reason).

CATS EATING THE GARDEN

Spring is just around the corner and it's the time of year when our thoughts
turn to the outdoors, as tender leaves emerge on deciduous trees, and timid
slips of flower shoots peek through the ground, in gay array. Gardeners
generally fall into two categories: those who enjoy watching their cats
sniffing and luxuriating in the greenery, and those who would be happiest if
cats just gave their gardens a wide berth. We'll try to address both those
needs, but first, a word from our sponsor:

Be a Considerate Cat Owner
If your cat is an indoor-outdoor cat, please be sure he is adequately
supervised when outdoors. Although he may be a perfect gentleman in your own
yard, he may be using your neighbor's strawberry patch as his outdoor
litter-box. There are a number of things you can do to keep him happily (and
safely) ensconced within your own boundaries.

How Ya Gonna Keep 'em Down on the Farm?

Once your kitty gets a load of his very own cat garden, he won't have the
urge to stray 'n' spray. Your first assignment is to give him his very own
outdoor 'litter box.' It can be an official box with a 2" x 6" frame, or
simply some sand dumped in a remote corner where he can have privacy en
toilette. If you choose a framed box, lay a loose wire screen down and cover
it with about 4 inches of sand. It will make it easier for sifting and
disposing of solid matter.

Comments on Soothing Mist from a customer:

"My dog has had a problem with compulsively chewing his back near his tail.
I've tried several things and they don't seem to work for long. I saw
Soothing Mist on Healthy Pet Corner's site and decided to give it a try.
The herbs in it sounded very soothing and healing. I added some Tea Tree
Oil because I like to deter fleas. I've used a spray of Lavender and Tea
Tree to prevent fleas for years, but he always ran from me when I wanted to
spray him. When I get the bottle of Soothing Mist, he comes to me and sits
still, so I think he knows it's helping him. I've been using it on my cat
that has skin issues also and it's been doing good." Robin

MARYLAND SHELTER FINDS THE VALUE IN A GOOD-FOR-'NOTHING' DOG
By Julia Lehner

Nautica pranced through the doors of the Humane Society of Baltimore County
with an energy that let everyone know she was ready to P-L-A-Y. Which
apparently was the exact reason why the puppy found herself at the shelter
in Reistertown, Maryland this past April.

The seven-month-old Australian cattle dog mix was a little too active for
the previous owners' lifestyle. The facts of the mismatched pooch and family
are only privy to them, but there was one small indication of their brief
struggle together. When asked on the Humane Society's relinquishment
questionnaire what they liked about Nautica, the family replied with a
terse, one-word response: "nothing."

GROWING UP WITH CATS GOOD FOR ALLERGIES

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - Allowing cats to be in a child's bedroom,
starting in the first year of life, may prevent the later development of
allergic asthma and hay fever, new research suggests.

Although many reports have shown an anti-asthma effect for early cat
exposure, others have actually tied such exposure to an increased risk of
asthma. These seemingly contradictory findings may relate to the timing and
amount of exposure.

In the current study, Dr. Rudiger von Kries, from the Institute for Social
Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine in Munchen, Germany, and colleagues
evaluated the effect of pet exposure on asthma risk in 8216 children, 5 to 7
years of age, living in rural regions of Bavaria.
