THE PROMISE OF A LIFETIME FOR A RACE HORSE

For thoroughbred racehorses coming off the track for the last time, the
non-profit Thoroughbred Retirement Foundation is very often the difference
between life and death. This rescue organization has been providing
lifetime haven to these gallant equine athletes when they have nowhere else
to go.

Hundreds and hundreds of horses -- many of them marked for death in the
slaughterhouses -- are instead alive and lovingly cared for in our steadily
growing network of retirement facilities. 

TRF experience and resources now play important roles in vocational
training, education, and research activities undertaken by a growing number
of both public and private sector organizations, such as riding programs for
the mentally and physically challenged. 

There are now programs at state correctional facilities where prison inmates
and juvenile offenders derive emotional, as well as educational, benefits
from horse care and management. 

Besides learning marketable skills, the horses' caretakers develop
responsibility, pride, and  self-esteem -- life skills that are reflected in
the glowing condition and spirited affection of the horses in their care.

Please pass this on to others who may find a way to participate. My wife
took riding lessons when we moved to Virginia and the lady who owned the
horses had taken in quite a few horses that were to go to slaughter so they
could have a carefree segment of life with nothing to do but provide
companionship to other horses and people. Maybe you know of somebody
looking for a horse?

PREGNANCY AND TOXOPLASMOSIS

If you're expecting a baby, you may have heard of toxoplasmosis because it
can cause serious birth defects. A woman who acquires toxoplasmosis during
pregnancy can transmit the infection to her unborn child. And a congenital
toxoplasmosis infection in utero can lead to miscarriage or an array of
malformations at birth. Because one of the ways to become infected is
through contact with the infected feces of cats, many pregnant women try to
lower their risk of acquiring toxoplasmosis by giving their cat away or
putting the cat outside.

Thankfully, you can easily avoid contracting toxoplasmosis from cat feces
without giving up your beloved feline "baby." Cats acquire toxoplasmosis
from eating contaminated raw meat, birds, mice, or soil. While cats are the
only species of animal to shed the infectious stage in their feces, other
animals can disseminate toxoplasmosis if their infected meat is eaten
without proper cooking.

AUSTRALIAN SELLS BOTTLED WATER FOR DOGS

CANBERRA, Australia - An Australian launched the latest accessory for
pampered pooches Tuesday ˜ bottled water in flavors like chicken and corn,
liver and bacon, or beef.

The purified Dog Plus K-9 water went on sale in pet stores at $2.10 for 1.3
pint plastic bottle.

"It's like a sports drink for dogs," said Andrew Larkey who thought up the
idea. "Dogs get bored with plain water ˜ they deserve variety just as much
as people."

Larkey plans a similar line of drinks for cats, in roast chicken and pork
flavors early next year.

People can safely drink it as well, he said, but it probably won't be a hit
with humans.

"I've actually developed a bit of a taste for it myself, but I think most
people's first reaction is to be a little suspicious," he said.
