A NOTE FROM RANDAL
******************
Hello Everyone,
Hope you all had a nice holiday! We did, we went to visit my family and our
son in Oklahoma City. After coming back home, we changed our website to a
new hosting company. This was a major change and we are still working out
all the changes.
We actually changed from a UNIX environment to a Windows server environment.
This has been a big learning curve for us and many of our programs that ran
on UNIX won't work so we are in the process of finding new ones or
converting them.
Needless to say, we have been busy and that is why Healthy Pet Corner has
not been able to accept orders via the shopping cart. We expect everything
to be smoothed out this week, though.
As always, thanks for the sharing of our ezines and websites.
Until next time,
Randal

RESEARCHERS STUDY IF DOGS CAN DETECT WEED
By BECKY BOHRER, Associated Press Writer
BILLINGS, Mont. - Someday soon, man's best friend could also be one of his
biggest allies in the fight against noxious weeds.
That's the hope of researchers like Kim Goodwin, who are studying whether
dogs can be trained to detect the prolific and problematic spotted
knapweed the same way they can be trained to sniff out drugs and bombs.
Goodwin, a weed prevention coordinator at Montana State University at
Bozeman, said she got the idea for putting dogs to work by seeing how dogs
have been used at airports, mail facilities and ports of entry to search for
everything from illegal drugs and bombs to prohibited agricultural products.
"I thought maybe dogs could do the same thing across landscapes because
we
have a problem with invasive plants spreading," she said. "To be
most
effective with weeds spreading, we have to detect them early."

POSITIVE REINFORCEMENT:
TRAINING YOUR DOG WITH TREATS AND PRAISE
We all like to be praised rather than punished. The same is true for your
dog, and that's the theory behind positive reinforcement. Positive
reinforcement means giving your pet something pleasant or rewarding
immediately after she does something you want her to do. Because your praise
or reward makes her more likely to repeat that behavior in the future, it is
one of your most powerful tools for shaping or changing your dog's behavior.
Correct timing is essential when using positive reinforcement. The reward
must occur immediatelywithin secondsor your pet may not associate
it with
the proper action. For example, if you have your dog "sit" but reward
her
after she's already stood back up, she'll think she's being rewarded for
standing up.

CAT URINATING OUTSIDE OF LITTER BOX
(And Other Unacceptable Behaviors)
Cats are not spiteful creaturesthat's one of their most admirable
qualities. Contrary to popular assumption, a cat who has a lapse in
remembering ground rules or stops using the litter box is not trying to get
even with or punish her owner. Your cat may be feeling out of balance, and
these signs should alert you that your cat may be unwell or that something
else is amiss. There probably is a good reason for this behavior, and it's
up to you to figure out what it is.
A cat who stops using the litter box, for example, may be getting a bladder
infection. Cats will associate the litter pan with the pain they feel upon
urinating and avoid using the litter, or the cat may not like the brand of
litter you've started using, or the cat may not feel comfortable using the
box where it is kept.
Other things that may disturb your cat may have to do with your behavior:
Have you changed your routine or are you under stress or feeling sad? Cats'
behavior may alter with any alteration in their routine or environment, such
as a new cat or a new home. If abnormal behavior persists, have your
veterinarian check your cat for any medical problems. If no medical problems
exist, your veterinarian may suggest an animal behavior specialist.

HERBAL HEARTWORM PROGRAM - PROGRESS REPORT: AUGUST, 2003
"I am very happy to inform you that Dixi has been on"Bandit's Program" for
35 days (42 days since her diagnosis) and she is doing very well. She has
had no coughing and has the sparkle back in her eyes and a little pep in her
attitude. Thank you again for doing something like this for other dog
owners. I was a little skeptical at first, because there is so much out
there on the net, but now I have seen that it works and I am very hopeful
and at this point I am very optimistic that she will have a full recovery."
- Kim Sternal
We get really excited to share in some of the herbal heartworm program
stories from Robin. She has a very rewarding time emailing with pet owners
and we appreciate what she's doing for all those dogs she's worked with for
the past two years. Go Robin!

COPING WITH THE DEATH OF YOUR PET
When a person you love dies, it's natural to feel sorrow, express grief, and
expect friends and family to provide understanding and comfort.
Unfortunately, the same doesn't always hold true if the one who died was
your companion animal. Many consider grieving inappropriate for someone who
has lost "just a pet." When your pet dies, it's normal to feel overwhelmed
by sorrow.
Nothing could be further from the truth. People love their pets and
consider them members of their family. Understanding how you grieve and
then finding ways to cope with your loss can bring you closer to the day
when memories bring smiles instead of tears.

PUPPY BORN WITHOUT FRONT LEGS
This puppy, now named Handy, was born with only a partial left front leg and
no right front leg. His owners turned him in to the animal shelter. The
same day Steve Foss read about Handy's plight in the St. Petersburg Times.
He rushed to the shelter and filled out an application to adopt the dog,
worried that no one would come forward because he is part pit bull terrier.
"He has too much heart just to be destroyed," said Foss, 44, who lives
in
St. Petersburg. "I went over there and just fell in love with him."
