In your lifetime, try to be the person your pet thinks you are.

There are two means of refuge from the miseries of life: music and cats. - Albert Schweitzer

One reason a dog can be such a comfort when you're feeling blue is that he doesn't try to find out why.-Unknown

I care not for a man's religion whose dog and cat are not the better for it. - Abraham Lincoln

"Dogs need to sniff the ground; it's how they keep abreast of current events. The ground is a giant dog newspaper, containing all kinds of late-breaking dog news items, which, if they are especially urgent, are often continued into the next yard." Dave Barry

CLEAN START COLON CLEANSE

Colon health is a major concern for people today. The colon is designed to
eliminate waste and toxins from the body, like those found in many of
today's processed foods. Unfortunately, processed foods don't supply your
body with the essential enzymes and fiber it needs to eliminate these
toxins. This can result in a buildup of toxic material in your colon, which
can lead to poisoning or disease. To help protect your body from common
colon toxins that deplete and degrade your health, Nature's Sunshine's
CleanStartú cleansing and detoxifying program provides the most complete and
balanced herbal cleanse available. Read more about it:

OZZY THE HERO DOG'S BARK SAVES COURTHOUSE

Persistent barking from Ozzy, a poodle-cocker spaniel mix, helped save a 106-year-old courthouse from being destroyed by fire.

The mutt woke his owners with loud barking early Sunday morning. Owner Ray Wheelington got up, saw thick smoke pouring out of the courthouse next door to his home, in the Algiers neighborhood of New Orleans, and quickly called the fire department.

Judge Mary "KK" Norman credited Wheelington's call for saving the structure. Wheelington gave the credit to his pooch.

PET FOOD INGREDIENTS UNDER SCRUTINY IN WAKE OF MAD COW

After the discovery of the nation's first case of mad cow disease, Suzanne Tibbetts is looking at the pet food labels in her cupboard a little more closely.

She wants to know exactly what "meat byproducts" are, and what risks, if any, they pose for her cats -- animals susceptible to a form of the fatal brain-wasting illness.

"Is that the stuff they scrape off the floor?" the Portland resident wonders. "And has it got brains in it?"

Cow brains and spinal cords -- tissues that can spread the infection -- are a routine part of the rendering mix from which pet food is formulated and show up in trace amounts in some U.S. pet foods, most often in dry supermarket varieties. The risk to pets appears small, but pet food manufacturers and federal regulators are scrambling this week to answer consumer questions about the diet of the average American pet.

Roughly 100 cats in the United Kingdom, where mad cow disease first appeared in the mid-1980s, came down with a feline form of the disease before commercial cat food and meat scraps were recognized as sources. Dogs appear to be resistant and, with the exception of cats, no other companion animals are known to be at risk. The mad cow infection has never been found in dogs, horses, birds or reptiles, according to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration's Center for Veterinary Medicine.

PUPPY NIPPING AND ROUGH PLAY

It's not always easy to convince a new puppy not to bite the hand that feeds him . . . pets him . . . or plays with him, for that matter. When puppies play with each other, they use their mouths, so they may also be inclined to bite or "mouth" your hand during play or when being petted. This is rarely aggressive behavior meant to do harm, but it is a difficult habit to break unless you encourage your puppy to try an acceptable alternative behavior. The goal is to redirect your puppy's energy onto acceptable chew toys, and to teach her to be gentle when a hand is in or near her mouth.

Encourage Acceptable Behavior

Redirect your puppy's penchant for nipping and biting by offering her more acceptable objects (such as chew toys) whenever you pet her. This technique can be especially effective when children want to pet her. As you or the child reaches out to scratch her behind the ears with one hand, offer the chew toy with the other. This will not only help your puppy learn that people and petting are wonderful, but will also keep her mouth busy while she's being petted. Alternate which hand does the petting and which one has the chew toy. You may need to start off by petting or scratching your puppy for short periods of time, since the longer she's petted, the more likely she is to get excited and start to nip.

AGGRESSION BETWEEN FAMILY CATS

If the battles between your feline family members are anything like the struggle between Cain and Abel, there are a few things you can do to prevent the "sibling rivalry" from reaching biblical proportions. Of course, it's almost impossible to guess how well any particular pair or group of cats will ultimately tolerate each other; some unusually territorial cats may never adjust to sharing their house, and may do best in a one-cat family. But many aggression problems between cats can be successfully resolved, even if the two don't end up best friends when all is said and done. You'll need to commit time and effort to solve aggression problems between cats, and don't give up without consulting the appropriate experts.

OUR PETS FOR LIFE CAMPAIGN

If you're lucky enough to share your life with a pet, you already know that the relationship requires commitment and perseverance. Surely you remember when you last came home to a chewed up pair of slippers (or worse!), a litter box accident, or an eerily quiet house thanks to your dog's "Hairy Houdini" escape act.

Pets provide us with unconditional love and companionship, and even lower our blood pressure. But sometimes they can make our blood boil when they act like, well, animals. Sadly, for too many animals exhibiting behaviors their caregivers can't deal with, their fate is tragic: They are given up, or given up on.

MAN RESCUES CAT; CAT SAVES MAN FROM FIRE

HUDSON, N.H. - A man who rescued a stray cat from the cold got the favor returned on Sunday when the cat woke him as his house filled with smoke.

Roland Rioux, 76, who lives alone, fell asleep watching television, but was jolted awake when the cat, named Munchkin, jumped up and landed on his chest with all fours.

Rioux was able to get up in time to call the fire department and evacuate safely.
