A NOTE FROM RANDAL
******************
Hi Everyone,
In todays issue we discuss how having a pet actually can help your children's
allergies. The best part of this article is that it is discussing a study from
the Journal of American Medicine (JAMA). JAMA is one of the more prestigious
journals. Therefore, for them to make the statements sure will carry lots of
weight. Make sure you read the article below in the "Pet Health News" section.

A DOG'S LIFE
FOOLS and their money are soon parted, says the old adage, but not half as quickly as dog lovers are separated from their wallets. The lap-dog of luxury
The British spend a staggering £73m a month on unnecessary extras for
their pooches, ranging from canine manicures to commissioning a portrait of
the little
mutt.
And it isnt dotty old women or lonely old men who are the biggest spenders,
but 16 to 34-year-olds who feel guilty about being out at work all day.

PETS MAY PREVENT CHILDHOOD ALLERGIES - By Dr. Ron Elder
In the past, a child at risk for allergies and asthma might have had to say goodbye to the family cat or dog.
It is has long been assumed that household pets contribute to childhood allergies. However, a study in the Journal of the American Medical Association challenges that popular assumption.
The study found that children exposed to two or more cats or dogs in the first year of life actually had a reduced risk of developing sensitivities to multiple allergens, including asthma.
The study examined 474 Detroit-area children from birth to ages 6-7. After an umbilical-cord blood test at birth, the study collected information on pet exposure, parental allergy histories, parental smoking, antibody levels in the cord blood, birth months and concentration of dust mites and cat allergens in the children's rooms at age two.

FEARFUL DOGS
Fear comes in all shapes and sizes, especially for your furry, four-pawed friend. Whether in response to a stranger or startling noise, your dog may display certain body postures, including lowering his head, flattening his ears back against his head, and tucking his tail between his legs if he's scared.
A frightened dog may also pant, salivate, tremble, pace, or try to escape.
He may show submissive behaviorsavoiding eye contact, urinating submissively, or rolling over to expose his bellyor
he may freeze and remain immobile. Some dogs will bark and/or growl at the
object that is causing their fear. In extreme cases of fearfulness a dog may
be destructive
(out of general anxiety or in an attempt to escape), or he may lose control
of his bladder or bowels.

CAT TRAINING/BEHAVIORAL HELP

THE CAT'S MEOW
The meow says many different things based upon its context, but essentially
it has one basic message: "I want your immediate attention."
The meow begins as a mewing sound made by little kittens that lets their
mothers know if they need some kind of help. In wild kittens, mewing mostly
disappears as they grow into adult cats. But the domesticated cat retains
some kitten-like qualities even after adulthood is reached. One such quality
is how cats talk to their humans -- they communicate to their people much
like a kitten does to its mother.
In addition, domestic cats learn to refine their meows to express different
needs. They have soft meows, pitiful meows, expectant meows (when the cat
food can is being opened). Although cats can develop a wide repetoire of
meows, they will not be the same for all cats. A cat will develop a
particular set of meows that it uses with its human. A different cat with a
different person will use slightly different meows.
Therefore, we can't produce a recording with translations and call it a
definitive guide to cat meows. But each person can, if alert, learn to
distinguish the meaning of their own cat's (or cats') meows.

GOOD NEWS PET STORY

LUCKY' DOG SAVES WOMAN FROM FIRE
Shortly before 2 a.m. Friday, Arlene Winchell was woken by the whimpering and nudges of her service dog, Lucky.
Having fallen asleep in her living room while watching television, she immediately noticed that her home was rapidly filling with smoke.
''I could see the flames,'' she recalled Friday afternoon, looking over at the gutted remains of her house on the corner of Hillcrest and Dunning roads. ''Red was reflecting off the bathroom door and I thought, 'Lucky, we've got to get out of here.'''
After maneuvering into the electric wheelchair she has required for the last four years due to multiple sclerosis, Winchell and Lucky quickly made for the kitchen exit which led to the garage and her full-size van.
''I didn't even realize the door didn't come up,'' Winchell said, gesturing to where sections of the garage door had been stacked on the driveway. She had apparently backed her van through the door to escape the fire in the early hours of the morning.
