These suggestions are found on the HSUS website and are a must read if you have a pet and child both. Practicing these suggestions should help your dog(s) and children interact much more safely and agreeably. After all, no one benefits when your dog bites.

NOVA SCOTIA BUSINESS OWNERS TRY TO GET THE POOP ON DOG OWNERS
YARMOUTH, N.S. - Business owners in Yarmouth, Nova Scotia, are arming themselves with cameras to try to catch dog owners who don't clean up after their pets.
'You don't think positive things' - business ownerAnyone in Yarmouth who doesn't pick up their dog's poop faces a $250 fine. But business owners say too many people are ignoring the bylaw, so they're trying to catch the dogs in the act, and the dog owners in the non-act.
Dave Whiting, general manager of the Yarmouth Development Corporation, has already handed out six disposable cameras to downtown businesses. He says he can't keep up with demand.
Whiting says it's all for the benefit of tourists.
"We'd like them to have a good impression of the town and having dog poop
on the sidewalk just doesn't do that."
The local Pharmasave is supplying the cameras. Owner Jim MacLeod says Yarmouth's
main street is constantly littered with dog poop, and that's bad for business. "You
don't think positive things."

If smoking is bad for you and for everyone else around you, think how it can affect your pet.
A non-smoker who lives or works with someone addicted to cigarettes usually is away from that person for periods of time. This is not true for a cat or dog that is subjected to cigarette smoke. Usually it is exposed all the time with none of the breaks a non-smoker takes.
A study by researchers at Tufts University found that cats living in homes with smokers are more than twice as likely as other cats to acquire feline lymphoma. Lymphoma is a cancer of the lymphocytes, a type of white blood cells.
Question: How long must a cat be exposed to smoke before it is likely to develop cancer?

Children seem to love dogs with a passion. They just need to learn to love dogs with some caution.
This lesson is critically important for kids. Each year, about 4.7 million people in the United States are bitten by dogs - 80% of them by canines we know and interact with regularly - and it's estimated that more than half of those victims are under the age of 13. What's more, children are at least three times more likely than adults to sustain a serious dog-bite.

SHAGGY BLUE RUG MAY BE THE TRIGGER FOR CAT'S UNWELCOME URINATION

Dear Dr. Fox: I have a wonderful, beautiful, 6-year-old cat named Summer. From the day I got her (at 3 months of age), even though she was an outdoor kitten, she has used the litter box faithfully. Never did she urinate outside of her litter box - until about six months ago.
I have wall-to-wall white carpeting in the bathroom with a blue throw rug over it and, all of a sudden, Summer began urinating on the blue rug. I took her to the vet who said she was OK, but that she must be relieving herself somewhere because her bladder was empty. This went on for a while until I finally threw the blue rug away.
I bought a new throw rug and she proceeded to urinate on it too, so I cleaned it and put it in the closet. While it was in the closet, she would lie on it but never once peed on it. The minute I put it back in the bathroom, she peed on it again.
She's had no trauma or changes in her life, so what would make her start urinating outside her box after six years?

account I think it is most likely that your cat is a "substrate marker."

GOOD NEWS PET STORY

Sosa, a cat belonging to Kimberley Kotar of Dorval, Que., was recognized for saving her mistress from a large poisonous snake that suddenly appeared in the home rock garden. The cat attacked the snake, a poisonous Eastern Cottonmouth not native to Quebec.
The local SPCA removed the snake, but how it got to Kotar's home remains a mystery. Sosa was bitten by the cottonmouth but recovered after three days.
