"Dogs need to sniff the ground; it's how they keep abreast of current events. The ground is a giant dog newspaper, containing all kinds of late-breaking dog news items, which, if they are especially urgent, are often continued into the next yard." Dave Barry

New Pet-Locator Chips May Not Work In Some Cities

Microchip implants are the newest answer to the traditional pet tag, but Oklahoma City veterinarians told Eyewitness News 5 that the latest version of the high-tech tracking devices may not always work.

Most implants, which are about the size of a rice grain, are similar in construction. However, the latest chips -- because of their high frequency -- are not detectable by some shelters.

Dr. Jeff Henderson, of the Britton Road Veterinary Clinic, plants the standard, 125 kilohertz chips in several dogs per week. Henderson said the tiny tags can be read with a standard scanner, which is linked to a nationwide database of pets. "(If) anybody finds it anywhere in the United States -- or the world, for that matter -- you can locate your dog," Henderson said.

For the Fretting Pet Owner, a Wireless Distress Signal - By Anne Eisenberg

In the Walt Disney film "The Incredible Journey," two dogs and a cat are finally reunited with their owners after a long and dangerous cross-country trip.

For many pets, there is no such happy Hollywood ending. In the United States, only a small percentage of animals separated from their owners are reunited, according to the American Humane Association.

But wireless technology may one day provide some help both for animals and the humans who cherish them, whether the pets have strayed across town or across the border.

In one emerging technology, owners can keep track of their dogs by way of miniaturized Global Positioning System receivers and mobile modems attached to the dogs' collars.

Escaping

Does your dog's ability to escape from the back yard have you convinced that he's nothing less than a hairy Houdini? Your never-ending attempts to keep your pet confined to your yard may seem comical at times, but every escape opens up the possibility of tragic consequences. If your dog is running loose, he's in danger of being hit by a car, injured in a fight with another dog, or hurt in any number of other ways. You're also liable for any damage or injury your dog may cause, and you may be required to pay a fine if he's picked up by an animal control agency. To prevent escapes, you'll need to find out how your dog is getting out of the yard, and more importantly, why he's so determined to get out.

Need Help With A Hyper Dog?

This is our most popular story from working with animals at our shop:

We had a couple who used herbs and had a hyper Rottweiler that would race to the door to "greet" anybody that visited. With an in-home business and customers picking up orders, this family needed some calming herbs for the dog. They began giving him VALERIAN ROOT and in about a week, the dog knew he needed it. Anytime they would grab a bottle of herbs, whether for themselves or him, the dog would come running and beg for a capsule. Most pets' instincts are still tuned in to nature. If you've got a hyper cat or dog, try Valerian Root. http://www.theherbsplace.com/valerian.html

Cat Toys: You Need Them

Although cats generally have different play styles than their canine counterparts, toys are as much a necessity for cats as they are for dogs. Toys help fight boredom and give cats an outlet for their instinctive prey-chasing behaviors. And when you are the one moving the toy around while your cat fishes for it, chases after it, or jumps in pursuit of it, playtime becomes a bonding experience for you and your cat.

"Safe" Toys

Our mothers always told us "no playing ball in the house," but cats can usually participate in that forbidden exercise without knocking down a vase or a lamp (and being grounded for two weeks). Still, there are plenty of factors that may contribute to the safety of the toy they're batting around.

Many of those factors are completely dependent upon your cat's size, activity

HSUS and Care2 Celebrate One Year of Click-to-Donate Program to Help Pets in Need

Just one year ago the race to help pets went cyber. Now we're counting on you to make the second year even better! With just one click of the mouse you can support The HSUS's Rural Area Veterinary Services (RAVS) program, which delivers desperately needed veterinary care and spay/neuter services to underserved areas across the country.

The HSUS and Care2 teamed up to launch the "Race for Pets in Need" at Care2.com, a web site that has been described as "the Yahoo for people who care about the environment." The race is an online program in which every click of the mouse generates a donation to the RAVS program.

Donations are generated via sponsors who agree to be featured on the "Race for Pets in Need" pages, which are located under the "Pets in Need" logo in the "Click to Donate" section of the Care2 web site. Even if no sponsors are secured for the period of the race, Care2 will donate $1 for every 1,000 clicks to The HSUS. We're looking for this to be the banner year to help RAVS help even more pets!

Through Care2.com, The HSUS also has the potential to reach nearly a million more people each month with life-saving information from our Pets for Life program, designed to keep pets and their people together by addressing the reasons why pets lose their homes. The Care2 web site will also feature a different pet tip each week, taken from The HSUS Pets for Life behavior tip sheets.

"This is a really quick and easy way for people to make a difference for the animals, while getting great pet tips at the same time" says Stephanie Shain, director of Companion Animal Outreach at The HSUS. "It's something people can do every day, right from their computer. Activism doesn't get any easier than this."

You can help, too, by visiting pets.care2.com every day and forwarding the link to friends and family. Thousands of pets are counting on you, so keep on clicking!

Dog saves owners life in Gilford fire - By Rich Bergeron

GILFORD - Katy, a 13-year-old black dog, woke up the occupant of a home on Old Lakeshore Road Monday night and alerted her to a fire in her oven.

Veronica Dearborn had left a pizza cooking in the oven when she fell asleep watching television.

Katy, a 13-year old dog, alerted the owner of a home on Old Lakeshore Road to a fire in an unattended oven Monday night.

Katy came to the rescue by barking until Dearborn woke up.

Dearborn extinguished the flames before the fire department arrived.

"I'm a heavy sleeper," she said, apologizing profusely to gathered firemen.

She was very grateful for the dog's help and said she got the black Labrador/Newfoundland mix as a puppy during Bike Week 13 years ago. "She's very good," said Dearborn about Katy.
