A Note From Randal
******************
Hi Everyone,
We hope you and your "pet friends" are all having a wonderful summer/fall
season transition. We have been busy with finishing up the pond for our backyard.
Soon we will be hearing frogs in the pond just outside our bedroom door.
We love the sounds of the frogs and have often been surprised at the different sounds they do make. One time in Alabama I thought I heard a lamb in the back yard. It turned out to be a frog. To me that was amazing!
We are very grateful that you continue to share with your friends and family our websites and ezines.
Until next time,
Randal

Dog Jacco begins narcotics training
RICK KLIMANOWSKI , Register Citizen Staff 08/20/2004
WINSTED -- Jacco, the Dutch shepherd that will soon be Winchester's new police dog, began his narcotics training, and at times residennts may see him sniffing around the Gilbert School.
Jacco, along with his handler Police Officer Mike Roy and trainer Terry Davis, spent Thursday morning in the halls of Winsted's quasi-private high school, taking the first steps in training Jacco to sniff out narcotics.
The one-year-old Jacco has been training at the K9 Depot, New Hartford, for the past several months. Roy said he's optimistic that the dog will be finished with his narcotics training in about 16 weeks, and Jacco will then be certified in narcotics training. It would be the first of three different certifications the dog is expected to earn.
The other two certifications are for tracking and attacking. Roy said Jacco will receive tracking training after he completes narcotics training, but the dog's attack certification will have to wait until he's a bit older.

What Motivates Your Dog?
From Krista Mifflin, Your Guide to Dogs.
What makes your dog tick? What is it that makes him want to do the things you ask him to do? Rewards can be anything that dog enjoys if he is easily motivated.
Attention
Play
Praise
Petting
Food pieces
Get the picture?
Food motivated dogs are easy to spot; they are the ones who drool at the presence of a dog food bag, are spotted watching somebody eat from across the room, do happy dances as you prepare their meals. Take advantage of this! I'm lucky enough to have one food-motivated dog, who will do anything for an edible treat.
Other Motivators
Affection and play are Raider's big incentives. He will do anything to be rewarded with play-time (tug-o-war, fetch, hide-n-seek), or snuggling on the sofa. Although it is hard to dangle a future cuddle or a game in front of a dog, I've rewarded him with both for long enough now that he expects it after he does something right.

Need Help With A Hyper Dog?
This is our most popular story from working with animals at our shop:
We had a couple who used herbs and had a hyper Rottweiler that would race to
the door to "greet" anybody that visited. With an in-home business
and customers picking up orders, this family needed some calming herbs for the
dog. They began giving him VALERIAN ROOT and in about a week, the dog knew he
needed it. Anytime they would grab a bottle of herbs, whether for themselves
or him, the dog would come running and beg for a capsule. Most pets' instincts
are still tuned in to nature. If you've got a hyper cat or dog, try Valerian
Root. http://www.theherbsplace.com/valerian.html

Cat Training Behavioral Help
***************************
When Discipline is Needed With a Cat
From Franny Syufy, Your Guide to Cats.
How to Identify and Correct Real Behavioral Problems
Although a concerned cat caregiver may find occasions when discipline is necessary
for a behavioral problem, more often than not, that behavior is the cat's way
of letting its human know that there is a problem with something in the household.
Cats are basically pretty well-behaved critters, and rarely "act out" unless there is a problem. For example, a cat will not urinate on your bed because he is "mad" at you, nor scratch the arms of your favorite chair because he is "stubborn."
Effective correction of a true behavioral problem is a three-fold process:
1. Determine first, if it is really a behavioral problem
2. If not, find and correct the real causes of the undesirable behavior
3. In the rare cases of a true behavioral problem, find and use a correct means of discipline or retraining.

How To Give Herbs To Pets
We have used herbs and supplements with pets since 1982 and that was before there
was a market for "natural pet products." Animals love herbs - it's
so natural for them. Here's some ways to get herbs into your pets and on how
much to give. http://www.theherbsplace.com/givetopets.html

DART Teams Hit the Bull's-eye in Southwest Florida
2004 Animals have the same instincts as people when heavy weather hangs over our heads: find a safe place to ride out the storm. Anyone who's seen a kitty wedge himself behind the stereo system during a tornado understands this basic animal behavior. Yet pets and humans appear to have drastically different instincts telling them when the coast is clear.
Case in point: The aftermath of Hurricane Charley in southwest Florida. Even before the last raindrop drop fell on Friday, August 13, humans were already busy assessing damage, commiserating with each other, and deciding whether to rebuild their lives in the Sunshine State. Animals on the other hand, generally, stayed put wherever they were, not knowing if Charley had similarly vicious friends.
The many Disaster Animal Rescue Teams (DART) in Florida understood this phenomenon. That's why, even though The HSUS's Carmelita Animal Compound in Punta Gorda began taking in homeless, injured and surrendered animals late Monday morning-just two and a half days after Charley cut his swath through this predominantly older community-we weren't expecting a deluge of animals until a day or two later.
