Dogs Trained to Smell Bladder Cancer in Urine - By Patricia Reaney

Man's best friend could also be a lifesaver in the fight against cancer.

Scientists said Friday dogs can be used to detect bladder cancer by smelling urine.

There is already anecdotal evidence of dogs alerting their unsuspecting owners of skin cancer by persistently sniffing suspicious moles which were later diagnosed as malignant.

Now, in research published in the British Medical Journal, scientists have shown dogs can identify bladder cancer by detecting chemicals in urine emitted by cancerous cells.

"Dogs can be trained to detect some odor characteristics for bladder cancer," Dr Carolyn Willis, of Amersham Hospital in Buckingham in central England, said in an interview.

Wet Spring Means More Opportunities For Leptospirosis

It's spring, so that means flowers blooming from the spring rains and more opportunities for leptospirosis to spread to domestic and wild animals.

"Lepto is everywhere," said Dr. Kenneth Harkin, a Kansas State University veterinarian and infectious disease specialist whose research emphasis is on Leptospirosis.

Harkin said lepto is more prevalent during the spring months rather than winter because of weather conditions.

"Lepto loves wet soil," Harkin said. "It's just too cold in the winter."

Leptospirosis is a bacterial disease that affects humans and animal, but according to Harkin, is rarely seen in cats. The bacteria are spread through the urine of infected animals, which can get into water or soil and can survive there for weeks to months. Infected wild and domestic animals may continue to excrete the bacteria into the environment continuously or every once in a while for a few months up to several years, according to the Centers for Disease Control.

Leptospira varieties have what are termed maintenance hosts and incidental hosts. Maintenance hosts are those animal species which serve as a reservoir for the Leptospira organism, and in which transmission is very efficient. Incidental hosts include those species of animals that do not act as reservoirs, but that can be infected by the organism. The organism replicates in the kidneys of maintenance hosts and is shed in the urine. Transmission can occur to the new host, either maintenance or incidental, by coming in contact with contaminated water, soil or the carcass of an infected animal.

More Control, More Comfort : The Gentle Leader: 
There are two main types of head halters available for dogs. One is the Halti, one is the Gentle Leader. Of the two, the Gentle Leader is better, in both design and control. A much simpler design, the GL sits behind the dog's ears and around the muzzle, two nylon straps, connected underneath the chin. This is NOT a muzzle. The GL controls the dog by effectively controlling his nose. Where the nose goes, the dog is sure to follow.

Second in Command : The Halti: 
In a close second comes the Halti. While made along the same basic principles as the Gentle Leader, the Halti has a much more complicated design that interferes with it's effectiveness. Also known to cause spinal and neck injuries in a struggling dog.
