Gross, Gross, Gross....

Emergency service workers had their stomachs turned when they cleaned up a smelly mess of spilled pig innards that blocked a busy Arkansas intersection for several hours on Tuesday.

Police said a truck spilled about 1,000 pounds (450 kg) of hog intestines fresh from a packing plant. The mess in the state capital, Little Rock, left several cleanup workers queasy.

"It was horrible. Oh, it was bad," said Sgt. Terry Hastings of the Little Rock police department.

The truck was carrying the entrails from a rendering plant to a facility where dog food is manufactured when the driver made an abrupt stop. The container was covered only by a tarp, which did not prevent the viscera from sloshing into the crossroads, police said.

Firefighters used bleach and fire hoses to flush away the mess.

When asked to describe the scene, Hastings was almost at a loss for words.

"Nasty, nasty. Phew," Hastings said.

Iams Announces Major Advance In Dog and Cat Welfare

Finally a little bit of humanity from this pet food manufacturer that does animal testing. I'm glad to see the pressure of animal lovers and humane organizations has accomplished something, although I would suspect it's because the word has spread about this company owned by Proctor and Gamble.

If you haven't been informed why so many pet owners are no longer using IAMS pet foods for their animals, here's a link to the story:

The Iams Company announced it will move all of its dog and cat feeding studies from all external contract facilities and universities to three locations: pet owners' homes, the Iams Pet Health and Nutrition Center and organizations where dogs and cats already live, such as animal shelters and groups that train and provide dogs to people in need. The transition will begin this year and be complete by October, 2006.

The insurance industry appears to have dog caregivers on a short leash, or at least those owners who prefer large, powerful breeds such as rottweilers, German shepherds, Doberman pinschers, akitas, pit bulls, or chows.

Insurers are re-evaluating coverages for homeowners who share their living spaces with such breeds. To the industry, the numbers are as sobering as a dog howling at midnight: One-third of all liability claims against homeowners stem from dog bites, a statistic that the insurance industry claims has forced it to pay out $310 million annually.

While October may be the favorite month of thousands of humans, who excitedly plan their costumes of spooks, vampires and monsters, in anticipation of Halloween, cats, particularly black cats, have little cause for celebration this month.

Much has been said about the more violent indignities that may be practiced on black cats at this time of year, but a more subtle cruelty has surfaced in recent years. Some shelters have noted a spate of black cat adoptions shortly before Halloween, with many of these cats returned to the shelters in the days after the holiday because "He just didn't work out." One might assume that these people just wanted another Halloween decoration for their house - a black cat in the window, perhaps, or a "familiar" to go with that new witch costume. It probably did not even occur to them that this practice is cruel and inhumane - this kind of individual typically thinks of cats as property, and not as sentient beings who suffer real trauma from being dragged back and forth from shelter to home and back again.

The Dog Film Festival will be held in Albuquerque on Saturday, showing nothing but canine cinema for dogs and their owners. Pooch snacks will nestle beside the popcorn.

"The criteria is that the films have to be about dogs, have dogs in them or once you watch the film, you think of a dog," said Dogfest founder Kim Snitker.

Several hundred humans and dogs are expected to watch the 25 short features submitted by aspiring filmmakers with a soft spot for hounds. First prize for the best short is $500, which will be given to an animal charity chosen by the winner.
