"Dogs need to sniff the ground; it's how they keep abreast of current events. The ground is a giant dog newspaper, containing all kinds of late-breaking dog news items, which, if they are especially urgent, are often continued into the next yard." Dave Barry

Senior Citizens May Benefit From A Pet - Jennifer Gardner

What's a good gift for a senior citizen this year? Depending on the health and living situation of your favorite elderly relative or friend, a pet may be an excellent choice.
Over the last decade, literally hundreds of studies have been done to determine the benefits of owning pets among the elderly. Among them: lower blood pressure, lower cholesterol levels, lower rates of cardiovascular disease, fewer doctor visits, higher levels of mental alertness, less stress and reduced depression.

Older pet owners also report that having a pet gives them something to care for and take responsibility for. After all, when the cat needs to be fed or the dog needs to go outside, it's hard to stay glued to your chair — even when one's arthritis makes getting up a challenge. As well, having a pet can keep an older person without scheduled activities in something of a regular routine, as he or she will have to awaken at a regular time, and feed, water, exercise and clean up after the animal.
But owning a pet is a huge responsibility. It's never a good idea to simply present a friend or relative with an animal. First, have a discussion about pet ownership. In most cases, you need to make sure they are red-hot enthusiastic about the idea of having a pet before proceeding. (Some severely depressed individuals have not initially wanted a pet but have improved through caring for one. In these cases the giver must be prepared to take over ownership of the animal if it doesn't work.)

Teflon Kills Birds

Avian veterinarians have known for decades that Teflon-coated and other non-stick cookware can produce fumes that are highly toxic to birds. As early as 1986, a Chicago-area expert on “Teflon toxicosis” called the phenomenon a “leading cause of death among birds,” and estimated that hundreds of birds are killed by the fumes and particles emitted from Teflon-coated products each year. Although an accurate national accounting of deaths is not available, in a single year this Chicago veterinarian documented 296 bird deaths in 105 cases involving non-stick cookware.

Dog and Cat Winter Suggestions
***************************

Protect Your Pet from Winter's Woes

In many areas, winter is a season of bitter cold and numbing wetness. Help your pets remain happy and healthy during the colder months by following these simple guidelines.

Don't leave dogs outdoors when the temperature drops. Most dogs, and all cats, are safer indoors, except when taken out for exercise. Regardless of the season, shorthaired, very young, or old dogs and all cats should never be left outside without supervision. Short-coated dogs may feel more comfortable wearing a sweater during walks.

No matter what the temperature, windchill can threaten a pet's life. A dog or cat is happiest and healthiest when kept indoors. If your dog is an outdoor dog, however, he/she must be protected by a dry, draft-free doghouse that is large enough to allow the dog to sit and lie down comfortably, but small enough to hold in his/her body heat. The floor should be raised a few inches off the ground and covered with cedar shavings or straw. The house should be turned to face away from the wind, and the doorway should be covered with waterproof burlap or heavy plastic.

Pets who spend a lot of time outdoors need more food in the winter because keeping warm depletes energy. Routinely check your pet's water dish to make certain the water is fresh and unfrozen. Use plastic food and water bowls rather than metal; when the temperature is low, your pet's tongue can stick and freeze to metal.

Greyhound Racing

HBO, one of the premier cable networks, offers a fresh answer to this question. The widely popular program, Real Sports with Bryant Gumbel, is devoting a portion of a rebroadcast episode to looking into the "real" story behind greyhound racing. By using this program, which typically focuses on athletics, to highlight the deceptiveness and tragic nature of greyhound racing, HBO is targeting a nation-wide audience that might not otherwise be aware of this issue.

Woman With Service Dog Barred From Theater - Nancy J. Sulok

Angie Monahan just wanted to go see "Christmas with the Kranks'' with her family.

She never expect to encounter a crank at the door of the theater. But that's what happened on Nov. 26 in Plymouth. The owner of Showland Cinema on Oak Road wouldn't let her enter the theater with her service dog.

For the past nine years, Monahan has been paralyzed from the neck down as a result of a brain stem stroke that occurred two weeks after she gave birth to her son.

Emdee, the black Labrador retriever named for the doctor who donated it, goes everywhere with Monahan. It has even gone with her in the past to the Showland Cinema.

The dog, which Monahan obtained two years ago, brings her the telephone receiver when the phone rings; turns the lights on and off; opens the dryer and takes the laundry out; and does other tasks for Monahan.

"He is wonderful,'' says Cindy McKenna of Koontz Lake, Monahan's mother.

Monahan, 33, said the trip to the movie included herself, her 9-year-old son, her sister, her nieces and her mother. They were looking forward to an enjoyable outing.
