A Note From Randal
******************
Hi Everyone,
Hope you are having a great new year. We went to Baltimore, Maryland for New Years eve and we celebrated it aboard the USS Constellation with good friends. The fireworks were great and so was the weather.
Speaking of weather, we have had nice weather in the mid 70's during the first of the week and now we are in the 50's. Hard to believe this is supposed to be winter.
Our cats are enjoying the opportunity to get out and enjoy the weather on the screened porch hope your dogs and cats can get out too.
Thanks for all your help in spreading the word about our sites and ezines.
Have a tail-wagging day!
Randal

Feline Lower Urinary Tract Disease
Here's a great article on this common problem. It covers the cause, symptoms, treatment, prevention and more. It was interesting to note this segment on the down side of feeding acidic foods:
-- High quality cats foods help keep the pH in the acidic range, helping to prevent struvite crystals from building up. Unfortunately, this acidic (low pH) urine now predisposes cats to calcium oxalate crystals. As a matter of fact, we are starting to see these crystals more commonly than struvite. They also tend to form with excess use of cortisone. --
Here's the article
Make sure to feed quality food, but don't make it too acidic. A balanced diet is best. We use Flint River Ranch pet foods since they keep the range on the acid side without producing excessive acidity.

Cocoa Mulch Danger For Pets
This alert comes from a veterinarian friend. Cocoa Mulch, which is sold by Home Depot and other Garden supply stores, contains a lethal ingredient called "Theobromine."
It is lethal to dogs and cats. It smells like chocolate and it really attracts dogs. They will ingest this stuff and die. Several deaths have already occurred. A dog that ingested a lethal quantity of garden mulch made from cacao bean shells developed severe convulsions and died 17 hours later. Analysis of the stomach contents and the ingested cacao bean shells revealed the presence of lethal amounts of theobromine.
According to the ASPCA:
Cocoa beans contain the stimulants caffeine and theobromine. Dogs are highly sensitive to these chemicals, called methylxanthines. In dogs, low doses of methylxanthine can cause mild gastrointestinal upset (vomiting, diarrhea, and/or abdominal pain); higher doses can cause rapid heart rate, muscle tremors, seizures, and death.
Eaten by a 50-pound dog, about 2 ounces of cocoa bean mulch may cause gastrointestinal upset; about 4.5 ounces, increased heart rate; about 5.3 ounces, seizures; and over 9 ounces, death. (In contrast, a 50-pound dog can eat up to about 7.5 ounces of milk chocolate without gastrointestinal upset and up to about a pound of milk chocolate without increased heart rate.)
According to tables we've examined, cocoa mulch contains 300-1200 mg. of
theobromine per ounce, making cocoa mulch one of the strongest concentrations
of theobromine your pet will encounter in any chocolate product.

Heartworms Are Gone With Herbal Program!
"My Bandit is 12 years old and doing great! He was diagnosed with Heartworms in February of 2004, a mild to moderate severity of infestation. He had a low activity level, with symptoms of coughing. He was on your Bandit's Heartworm Program for about 4 months and then tested negative for heartworms. I couldn't believe it! His cough stopped almost immediately when I started the treatment and he seems so full of life and playful (like a puppy). He is so happy and so am I!" Karen P.

Animal Disaster Relief Organization
Noah's Wish is a not-for-profit, animal welfare organization, with a straight-forward mission. They exist to keep animals alive during disasters.
They're not involved in any other animal welfare issues. Fortunately, there are a multitude of national and local animal welfare organizations who are tackling the issues that adversely affect animals.
No other organization has made the commitment to focus on disaster relief work for animals. That's the void they are filling.
