A Note From Randal
******************
Hi Everyone,
We hope this issue finds you and your pets well during this winter season. Please take a moment to read the enclosed vaccination article. It appears we as pet owners may be over vaccinating our pets. This article suggests some methods to keep our pets protected but with a whole lot less medications being used.
We appreciate all you do for our sites and ezines.
Until next time!
Randal

The Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race Kills and Injures Dogs
Every March in the Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race, dozens of dog-and-musher
teams race approximately 1,150 miles from Anchorage, Alaska, to Nome, Alaska,
in pursuit of hundreds of thousands of dollars in prize money. The race route
is roughly equal to the distance between Los Angeles and Denver, or from New
York City to Memphis, a distance that the teams typically run in
nine to 14 days. The current speed record, set in 2002, is eight days, 22 hours,
and 46 minutes, less than half the time it took to run the first Iditarod race
in 1973.
The race forces the dogs to run too far and too fast in frequently grueling trail and weather conditions, and it exacts a severe, and sometimes fatal, toll on dogs' physical and psychological systems. The HSUS opposes the Iditarod in its current form—or any other mushing event in which heavy emphasis is placed on competition and entertainment and in which dog deaths and injuries are regular consequences.
The first race is reported to have resulted in the deaths of 15 to 19 dogs. In 1997, the Anchorage Daily News reported that "at least 107 [dogs] have died" over the history of the event. Since then more deaths have occurred. Injuries and ailments that occur during the race include pulled tendons, sore muscles and joints, sore and cut paws, dehydration, heat stress, and diarrhea.
Unfortunately, the remainder of the year may be bleak for many sled dogs. The majority of these dogs do not experience lives most Americans would consider appropriate for companion animals. Instead, these dogs are often raised completely outdoors in harsh northern climates in large "dog yards," where they are confined by tethers with up to 200 other dogs. While the tethers may allow them access to doghouses, they also purposely prevent them from interacting with other dogs.
What can YOU do?
The Iditarod generates tourist revenue and publicity every year. Despite past sponsor withdrawals, the race continues to attract worldwide media attention. Voicing opinions, however, can help protect dogs forced to participate in the Iditarod by letting race organizers and financiers know that greater care should be exercised to effect a cruelty-free race.

Are We Over-Vaccinating?
With the prevailing recommendations, a 12 year old dog would receive vaccinations for 157 antigens in it's lifetime. By omitting unnecessary vaccines like Lyme, Corona and Lepto and by following the every three - year compromise recommended by the American Animal Hospital Association that number of antigens would be reduced to 32.
Likewise the number of antigens administered in the lifetime of a 12 year old cat would be reduced from 107 -135 to 32 by following the recommendations of the American Association of Feline Practitioners.
These new protocols will provide the same protection, but with much less
risk of adverse reactions.

Submissive Urination - From Krista Mifflin, Your Guide to Dogs.
You know she'll get you as soon as you open the door.
You know there is no escape, so you steel yourself and open the door to face your dog. And you stand patiently, waiting while your ecstatic dog goes through an entire gymnastics routine of roll-overs, spins, jumps and crawls. You give her the routine hugs, pets and "Did you miss me?" voice. Then you stand up, and she follows you to the kitchen where you grab the paper towels and cleaning spray, to wipe up her "greeting puddle". The same puddle she leaves you every time you come home.
What can be done about the "greeting puddles"? Submissive urination plagues about one in ten dog owners (the dogs don't know it's a problem), and is essentially a personality trait.

Spraying Cats
If you've ever lived with a cat who sprays, you certainly remember the distinct odor it produces. Oftentimes, unaltered males are the culprits; they use their spraying "talent" to mark their territory, thus telling all felines in surrounding areas that this is THEIR kingdom!
Contrary to popular belief, female cats do spray -- although it's uncommon. Spraying is generally motivated by territorial anxiety, such as adding new family members or pets, or having too many pets in the home.
However, other situations, such as seeing neighborhood cats walking around your yard, moving/remodeling, fighting among family members, a change in routine or number of visitors, or even scolding kitty, may cause your cat to start spraying. An unacceptable litter box -- a dirty box, different litter, bad location -- could trigger a marking problem. So the underlying reason for the marking behavior must be addressed before the behavior can change.

Nature Calls Police Dog, Drugs Stash Found
A police dog let out into an empty field to answer the call of nature ended up finding an underground drugs stash.
Alerted by their German shepherd, police in a Helsinki suburb late last week
found two glass jars wrapped in plastic and containing over a pound of amphetamines.
"This finding shows that hiding drugs in nature has become common and anyone can stumble upon a cache," said Espoo police inspector Jukka Paasio.
He said the drugs had apparently been hidden for some time. Police have launched an investigation.
