A Note From Randal

Hi Everyone,
Our Cat, Skipper, Has a Green Goatee! It must be because he chose an herbal
home to live in? Or maybe because Spirulina is a green seaweed? We put it on
his meal because of its high nutritional value and he loves it because it smells
fishy. We've been trying to get a picture of him when he finishes his meal
but it's sure hard to get a shot without having those eyes reflect
the light. My wife's diligence paid off and we got a good one! Visit our photo
gallery here and take a look at our precious, cute, and loveable Skipper:

On a sadder note, the HSUS needs our help in stopping Canada from continuing
to slaughter baby seals. Go to their site to sign their pledge that you won’t
eat or purchase Canadian sea food (they explain on their site how this is connected).
This will surely help stop this senseless killing of baby seals.

Scientists' Curiosity May Have Killed the Cat Allergy - From Reuters
A new chemical compound, part cat and part human, may provide an end to misery-making cat allergies, U.S. researchers reported this week in the journal Nature Medicine.
They said their approach in creating the compound might work against more dangerous allergies, such as deadly reactions to peanuts.
The compound, tested in mice bred to be allergic to cats, virtually shut down the histamine reaction that caused the uncomfortable symptoms of cat allergies such as runny eyes, sneezing and itching, Dr. Andrew Saxon of UCLA and his colleagues reported.

Choosing the Right Dog
There's one problem with adopting a dog from an animal shelter: The selection of available canine companions can overwhelm you! Man's best friends come in all shapes, sizes, and, of course, personalities.
The good news is that almost any shelter dog can make a wonderful, lifelong companion for you and your family. The bad news is that some of those bundles of energy will make less appropriate pets for you than others.
The key is simply knowing what to look for. Here are a few things to think about:
Examine Yourself
Choosing the right dog generally means identifying the type of animal that matches your lifestyle and wants. If you live alone in a small, third-floor apartment, for instance, adopting a large, active retriever mix might not be the best choice. Conversely, if you have a family of four and are looking for a companion to match your active lifestyle, such an animal may be perfect. A dog's size, exercise requirements, friendliness, assertiveness, and compatibility with children should all figure . . .

Choosing the Right Cat
You may have heard the saying, "You own a dog, you feed a cat." It's true that cats value their independence a bit more than their canine counterparts. But if you've ever been around cats, you already know they crave and require love and companionship.
Cats make wonderful pets and most will easily adjust to a variety of lifestyles and living spaces. Every cat is a true individual, though, so it's important to take the time to choose a four-footed friend who's right for you. A cat's personality, age, and appearance, as well as the kinds of pets you already have at home, are all things you should keep in mind when making your selection.
Choose a Personality
Stroll past a few cat cages at the shelter, and you'll notice that some cats meow for special attention, while others simply lie back and gaze at you with an air of superiority. There are as many different personalities of cats as there are cats in the shelter. Which disposition is best for you? You have to decide.
But regardless of individual personality, look for a cat who's playful, active, alert, and comfortable while being held and stroked. At the shelter, ask an adoption counselor for assistance when you wish to spend some time with individual cats. Keep in mind that, because they are in an unfamiliar environment, some cats who are usually quite social may be frightened or passive while . . .

Eat, Drink and Wag Your Tail - by Pamela Berger
My website features information on a film I made with Dr. Richard Pitcairn,
of 18 vignettes about improving the lives of our dogs through nutrition and
it began only after my own dog died of cancer at a young age. Segments range
from success stories, recipes, mini lessons in dog health to a trip to Italy
to see what the European dogs eat...Although it tackles a serious issue of
diminished health in our dogs, the segments are lighthearted and fun, meant
to educate while keeping us laughing along the way.
Please feel free to visit my website to learn more. Thanks for your time and
consideration.

From the Street to Heartworms to Healthy!
Buddy is a lovable mutt that we took off the streets. He took to living with
us like he had been ours forever. We thought we did everything right with Buddy,
but a very brief lapse in his routine heartworm treatment was all it took.
In mid-July 2004, we got the sad news from the Vet that Buddy had a full blown
case of heartworm. The Vet went on to voice concerns over
his heart, saying that it "didn't sound too good." Having tested
positive for heartworm on the "blood drop test" our Vet immediately
drew some blood for a lab analysis, and prepared a slide to look for signs
of the
microfilaria that adult worms produce. We overheard him call an assistant
over to look at the blood sample as he said, "Look - you can see tons
of microfilaria."
Buddy's story has a great ending and his owner has taken the time to document and write a beautiful story about it along with pictures. If you'd like to read "the rest of the story," here's the link to Bandit's Buddies website with Buddy's story at the top of the page:
