In your lifetime, try to be the person your pet thinks you are.

There are two means of refuge from the miseries of life: music and cats. - Albert Schweitzer

A Note From Randal
******************

Hi Everyone,

Hope you are enjoying this time of year with your pet(s) as we are. Colors are jumping out of our yard and many others as the days tick by. I love the bright colors and soon my peonies will be in full bloom.

In this issue, there is a section on some upcoming legislation I hope you will get behind. We need this law passed and the animal abuse stopped. A few minutes is all it takes.

As always, we appreciate your willingness to share our sites and ezines with your family and friends.

Have a tail-wagging day!

Randal

Mosquitoes in Your Yard?

With all the reasons to avoid mosquitoe bites, we should all be doing some landscaping with consideration to what will repel these pesky critters. Especially for the benefit of animals that may spend most of their lives outdoors.

Plants really do work to repel insects and animals .... you just have to find out what goes with which. Scottie Johnson has some ideas on things to consider. His belief is that there are many things you can do to keep mosquitoes away, but choosing plants that will beautify your yard as well makes it even more fun.

Support H.R. 817 and Help End Animal Fighting

Sponsored by Rep. Mark Green (R-WI), this bill increases penalties to a felony level for the interstate traffic in animals for dog fighting, cockfighting, and hog-dog fights and the barbaric weapons used in cockfights. This is important because prosecutors are reluctant to spend time and money on misdemeanor cases. Thank you for taking action to put an end to animal fighting.

Editor’s Note: Please take the time to tell your representatives how you feel about this awful tragedy, I did.

Barking - From Krista Mifflin, Your Guide to Dogs.

Defining Problem Barking:
Problem barking is generally defined as barking constantly for a period of half an hour or more, or more specifically, any prolonged period of barking that irritates your neighbors.

Most barking occurs while the owner is away, leaving the owner (you) with a false idea that his/her doesn't bark at all. Dogs that tend to bark when their owners are gone often start up after the owner is far enough to be unable to hear, and stop minutes before the owner arrives at home.

Why Dogs Bark for Prolonged Periods of Time:
The most common reasons for dogs to bark for prolonged periods of time are

Aggression Between Family Cats

If the battles between your feline family members are anything like the struggle between Cain and Abel, there are a few things you can do to prevent the "sibling rivalry" from reaching biblical proportions. Of course, it's almost impossible to guess how well any particular pair or group of cats will ultimately tolerate each other; some unusually territorial cats may never adjust to sharing their house, and may do best in a one-cat family. But many aggression problems between cats can be successfully resolved, even if the two don't end up best friends when all is said and done. You'll need to commit time and effort to solve aggression problems between cats, and don't give up without consulting the appropriate experts.

Common Types of Aggressive Behaviors between Cats:

Sometimes Everybody Needs a Little Therapy - by Mark Asher

Do you ever feel down and out, like the weight of the world is on your shoulders? Do you ever feel like you are not strong enough to withstand the daily routine of life? If so, you’re not alone.

Millions of people are stressed out in this country, both emotionally and physically. However, studies show that those who have pets in their lives are better able to cope with this stress than those who don’t interact with companion animals.

The perpetually stressed aren’t the only ones who benefit from a

Missouri Dog Wins Hero Award for Saving Rancher's Life

A border collie and golden retriever mix from Missouri has won the National Hero Dog award for alerting her owner that her husband was pinned under a tractor.

Eight-year-old Shannon, who lives on an 80-acre ranch in Washington, Missouri, accepted the 23rd annual National Hero Dog award in Woodland Hills today with her owners Ted and Peggy Mandry.

The award does not honor trained rescue dogs, instead celebrating the achievements of companion animals that know what to do when there's trouble. Shannon caught media attention last June when firefighters credited her for saving Ted Mandry's life.

Mandry was unloading debris about a quarter-mile from his house when a parked tractor popped out of gear, rolled down a ravine and toppled into a ten-foot deep gully. The tractor's front end loader trapped Mandry's right leg.

Mandry, who was bleeding profusely, shouted and whistled to attract someone's attention. However, the ravine blocked the sound, and no one came to his aid.

According to Peggy Mandry, at about the time her husband began shouting and whistling, Shannon began to scratch and whine to be
