"Dogs need to sniff the ground; it's how they keep abreast of current events. The ground is a giant dog newspaper, containing all kinds of late-breaking dog news items, which, if they are especially urgent, are often continued into the next yard." Dave Barry

A Note From Randal
******************

Hi Everyone,

Here in Virginia, we are a long way from directly experiencing the after effects of Hurricane Katrina. However, we want to do our part and provide some information through this newsletter to aid the pets and owners that have been affected. In this issue, we are presenting two challenges that are directly related to the pets and owners that have been affected by the storm.

1. We need to ask the President and others to rescue the pets that may still be in homes affected by the storm.

2. We should ask our leaders to set up a system of pet-friendly evacuation centers that owners can use when they are asked to evacuate an area due to an approaching storm.

These are serious issues and we hope the present leadership will meet the challenge appropriately. For those affected by this terrible situation, our prayers are with you.

Until next time,

Randal

Pet Sitters International Calls for Creation of Pet-Friendly Evacuation Centers Throughout United States

Pet Sitters International (PSI), a worldwide educational association for professional pet sitters, is asking President Bush and state officials to support the creation of designated pet- friendly evacuation centers throughout the United States. These alternative centers could act as temporary shelters for both pets and their owners during disasters. PSI is proposing this initiative to reduce the loss of human and animal life as witnessed in the devastation of Hurricane Katrina. According to the American Pet Products Manufacturers Association, 64.2 million American households own pets. The 2000 US Census revealed that more homes have pets than children, a fact that dramatically illustrates America's love for its pet population. Because most designated evacuation facilities are not equipped or authorized to accommodate animals, many people awaiting rescue also await a heart-wrenching decision -- abandon their pets or face possible tragedy. PSI sees designated pet-friendly evacuation centers as a key solution to this problem. "We have been deeply moved by troubling images of abandoned pets,

Hairball and Skin Sores

"I gave my friend some Golden Salve for some callouses she has and it's doing a great job on them, but she also decided to use it on her cat's sores she had from fighting. It is healing them up great, but she's also noticed that the cat isn't throwing up hairballs any more." Rob

Help My Dog is Afraid of Car Rides! - Your Guide, Krista Mifflin

Many dogs experience fear and anxiety when placed in a vehicle, and unfortunately, not many know why. Part of it may be that the only time your dog enters a vehicle is for a trip to a stressful location (veterinarian's office, shelter, a place he dislikes for whatever reason). The key to removing the anxiety is a fairly lengthy desensitization process. As with all desensitizing attempts, things must be taken slowly. Each step should be taken over the course of a few days. This allows your dog to get used to a non-threatening environment enough so that he or she will learn to associate the car with good times, rather than stress-inducers.

Step One : Arm yourself with treats and goodies, and walk your dog around the car with the doors . . .

When Discipline is Needed With a Cat- Your Guide, Franny Syufy

How to Identify and Correct Real Behavioral Problems
Although a concerned cat caregiver may find occasions when discipline is necessary for a behavioral problem, more often than not, that behavior is the cat's way of letting its human know that there is a problem with something in the household. Cats are basically pretty well-behaved critters, and rarely "act out" unless there is a problem. For example, a cat will not urinate on your bed because he is "mad" at you, nor scratch the arms of your favorite chair because he is "stubborn."

Effective correction of a true behavioral problem is a three-fold process:

Different Kind Of Pet Story
*******************

Puss and Hoots - By Barbara Hoffman

'YOU can't force a cat to do anything she doesn't want to do," Yuri Kuklachev says.

Lucky for him, his cats want to do all kinds of things - leap through hoops, balance balls on their noses, jump from great heights ... even paw their way across the parallel bars.

They'll be doing all that and more - pawstands! pushing little baby carriages! - at the Tribeca Performing Arts Center, where Kuklachev's amous Moscow Cats Theatre opens today.

And no, Kuklachev explains laboriously, through his interpreter, this is not a circus, where animals work for food, but a theater, where his cats - all 120 of them - love to perform, just for the fun of it.

No treats? No little mice as a reward?

He reaches over to caress his interviewer's hair. (Not that she jumped into a handstand over it.)

"Just this," he says in Russian. "Love. You can work with a cat only with . . .
